AstroCamp, Technology, and the Week Ahead

Hello Community Families,

I'd first like to say THANK YOU to KATHYRN for putting the AstroCamp trip together and to the FIFTH GRADE TEAM: DANIELLE, KIRSTEN, AND BRANDON for keeping it all together throughout the entire trip. None of it is easy and yet this team makes it look easy and FUN!
Our fifth graders had a BLAST at AstroCamp and the experience was well worth it. And THANK YOU to the 5th grade parents for being SO patient and supportive! We appreciate you!

The second Tea Time with Toni was this past Friday and the topic was Technology. We talked a little about managing screen time and learned about the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards. We looked at a Social Science lesson to see how the ISTE standards were integrated. A few of the parents pointed out, however, that this was not a real lesson being taught in a CMCS classroom. CMCS parents want to know what is really happening in CMCS classrooms with technology. This past week, our office staff worked hard to get devices ready and delivered to all 2nd-5th grade classes. First grade classes will receive their iPads this week. We are still waiting to receive the remaining 50 iPads needed to complete the kindergarten set, so we are still uncertain when kindergarten iPads will be distributed. Once teachers have had an opportunity to begin using the devices in classroom instruction, we will provide updates on how things are rolling out.  During our next Instructional Leadership Team meeting, we will discuss how each grade-level team may share this information with parents.

The next Tea Time with Toni is scheduled for Friday, October 18. The topic will either be RULER, the social-emotional program we've adopted and currently being implemented at Community Magnet or our revised 2019-2020 Safe School Plan.

Please look out for a survey coming soon on the topics you'd like covered for future Tea Times! While we want to keep you updated on technology roll-out and RULER, we also want to ensure that your voice is heard and the topics that are important to you are discussed.

Next week brings the month of October and cooler fall weather.  There are plenty of jackets and sweaters in our Lost & Found so you may want to check it out.
