Day 5: Until Further Notice

Image
Happy Weekend Community Families, Teachers, and Staff! I know this has been a very difficult week for everyone in our school community. Uncertainty is weighing heavily on our minds as we wonder how much longer we'll be living in this strange state of affairs. When will there be more toilet paper and hand sanitizer? When will this pandemic be over?  When will we return to school? When will things get back to normal??   So many questions, but the only answer we get is, " Until further notice" . Until further notice, teachers will continue to provide distance learning to their students. This week has been one of tremendous growth for teachers, students, and parents as they adapt to a whole new way of teaching and learning. Adjustments will be made as we go along but, for now, we need to accept that these are not optimal conditions for learning. At home, our students have varying levels of access to internet service, devices, and support. Our students are ab

Day 3: Continuity of Learning

Hello Community Families, Day 3's instructional day is done. I love hearing your feedback, so keep it coming. Teachers are feeling more confident in teaching long distance. Today, I reached out to our Enrichment teachers to find out what support they are able to give. I'll fill you in on that in a few days.  Cindy, our Resource Specialist, is beginning her work with small groups. The possibility of opening schools before the end of the school year is looking slimmer.  We'll be hearing more about that and the plans moving forward from Supt. Beutner next week. Meanwhile, Andrew has been on campus busily deep-cleaning and sanitizing every classroom. While teachers continue to teach. Here are pictures from today's distance learning: Tracy R.'s new "classroom" Today's Zoom lesson with Kathi's class Chai's Zoom lesson this morning! REMINDER:  Let us know if you plan to attend CMCS next year: Are you Returning? LAUSD UPD

Day 2: Continuity of Learning

Good afternoon Community Families, Well, it's day 2 of this crazy, unbelievable social distancing and it seems it will be the norm for the unforeseeable future.  I received the very sad and extremely disappointing news that my daughter's college graduation, scheduled for mid-May, will not take place as scheduled. The CDC has set new guidelines that call for cancelling or postponing all large gatherings for at least the next 8 weeks. Despite the frustration and uncertainty that we're all feeling, Day 2 went very well for teaching and learning long distance! Each grade level team is working collaboratively to provide solid and consistent learning activities for their students.  Fourth grade teachers used Zoom to teach language arts, math, and social science to their students today. Here you see Tracy teaching Geometry to her students, and Paul connecting with his students. And here is a photo of Tracy R. and her 1st grade students reconnecting for the

Day 1: Continuity of Learning

Good Afternoon Community Families, How was your day?? I'm interested to hear what was successful, what wasn't, and anything (including pics) you'd like to share -- and wouldn't mind I shared on my blog. :)  One problem, I know, was that LAUSD's systems crashed. Also, LAUSD is not supporting Google, so students and teachers would need to connect using gmail accounts other than their LAUSD gmail accounts. It took a while to figure all of that out today.  Tomorrow should be much smoother as teachers (and LAUSD) work out all the kinks. A few teachers came in (voluntarily) for a couple of hours today. Other teachers taught from home.  Sebastian and his students Sebastian, 3rd grade - Room 17, was so excited ZOOMing with his students today! Doesn't he look happy? He was teaching a math lesson when I walked into his classroom. You can see his students all on his screen. They all said, "Hi Toni!" when I walked in.       So cool! Margot read

A Week in the Community

This week I took my camera with me to catch classroom lessons and enrichment activities in action. If this isn't proof that Community is a true community, I don't know what is! Take a look at what happened in the Community this week . . . Spring Planting Day with Ana Pics by Ana Park: CMCS Global Garden Students had a great time on Wednesday with our Global Gardener, parent volunteer Ana Park. Here is what she says, " February is the time to plant our spring garden as the weather is starting to warm up. I usually involve 6-7 classes to help in the garden and Kathryn helped me coordinate the teachers that wanted to participate. Below are the rooms that participated: Rms. 3, 6, 10, 15, 20, 21, and 22. Students harvested snap peas, carrots, Swiss chard, and red onions, and were able to take them home. They also cleaned out old plants, added new soil into the planters (they carried the 2 cubic feet bags by themselves!), and planted soybeans, carrots, Dragon T
