Day 5: Until Further Notice
Happy Weekend Community Families, Teachers, and Staff!
I know this has been a very difficult week for everyone in our school community. Uncertainty is weighing heavily on our minds as we wonder how much longer we'll be living in this strange state of affairs. When will there be more toilet paper and hand sanitizer? When will this pandemic be over? When will we return to school? When will things get back to normal?? So many questions, but the only answer we get is, "Until further notice".
Until further notice, teachers will continue to provide distance learning to their students. This week has been one of tremendous growth for teachers, students, and parents as they adapt to a whole new way of teaching and learning. Adjustments will be made as we go along but, for now, we need to accept that these are not optimal conditions for learning. At home, our students have varying levels of access to internet service, devices, and support. Our students are absolutely affected by these strange events that even the adults don't fully comprehend. It's difficult for them to focus and learn with extreme stress and uncertainty swirling about. My best advice in these circumstances: don't expect perfection, prioritize quality time with your children (even if it means taking a day off from distance learning), treat everyone with an extra dose of patience, flexibility, and understanding, and make the most of this quiet time with your loved ones. We are living through a worldwide pandemic and, unfortunately, even educating our children has to take a back seat to our safety and health . . . until further notice.
Kindergarten teachers hosted playdates today and will continue next week on Zoom. Every kindergarten family should have received Zoom invitations for these fun play dates. This is a great way for students to reconnect with their classmates and teacher. Please have them participate, if at all possible! Here are pics from today's playdates:
SHOUT OUT TO ROOM 14!
5th grade Mom, Adrienne, wanted to send a special shout out to Kirsten for facilitating learning through Google Meet: "She takes time to review daily work assignments, provides reminders and answers questions. She also creates an opportunity for the students to engage with one another."
I think Lauryn deserves a shout out, too, for being such an organized and dedicated student. Looks like they're taking all this remote learning in stride!
RESOURCES FOR PARENTS:
On Monday, March 23, MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) will launch Virtual MOCA, daily virtual programming with meaningful, creative, and fun opportunities to connect.
Our School Psychologist, Denise Perez, suggests At Home Activities and Resources for parents. Although it's designed for students with special needs, it is a great resource for all families. It provides resources for free internet services, low-cost games and activities available at Dollar Tree, virtual, on-line, and non-screen learning activities to keep students engaged and busy.
Online Educational Content
LAUSD provides a variety of content online to help students continue learning during school closures. Among the key resources available are:
Schoology — The District's Learning Management System (log on)
Edgenuity — An online course system helping students master core content, recover credits and more. (log on)
The Khan Academy — A set of short video lessons in a variety of subject areas allowing students to master grade-level content at their own pace.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR FAMILIES:
- GO TO THE SOURCE: As teachers adapt their remote lessons to the needs of their students, parent-teacher communication becomes even more important. If you have a question, concern, or a complaint about the instruction being provided, the best and most efficient way to get these issues resolved is to reach out to the teacher first. If your concerns are not addressed after your discussion with the teacher, it would then be appropriate to come to me with your concerns. Please, always go to the source first if you have a concern or a complaint. This also applies under 'normal' circumstances.
- Thank you to the families who have confirmed their plans to return to Community Magnet CS for the 2020-2021 school year. We will be sending email reminders to those who have not yet responded before the March 27th due date. If you do not receive an email reminder, you may assume that your confirmation has been received.
To all Community Families, Staff, and Teachers-- please practice healthy habits over the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus as soon as it is safe to do so.
Sincerely,
Toni
