Day 1: Continuity of Learning

Good Afternoon Community Families,
How was your day?? I'm interested to hear what was successful, what wasn't, and anything (including pics) you'd like to share -- and wouldn't mind I shared on my blog. :)
One problem, I know, was that LAUSD's systems crashed. Also, LAUSD is not supporting Google, so students and teachers would need to connect using gmail accounts other than their LAUSD gmail accounts. It took a while to figure all of that out today. Tomorrow should be much smoother as teachers (and LAUSD) work out all the kinks.
A few teachers came in (voluntarily) for a couple of hours today. Other teachers taught from home.

Sebastian and his students
Sebastian, 3rd grade - Room 17, was so excited ZOOMing with his students today! Doesn't he look happy? He was teaching a math lesson when I walked into his classroom. You can see his students all on his screen. They all said, "Hi Toni!" when I walked in.       So cool!

Margot reading a story to her student

Margot is absolutely determined to get this technology thing down. That's her on the screen of her student's device! She used Google Classroom to record herself reading a story to her students. So awesome!!

Second-Fifth grade teachers connected with their students today using either Google or Zoom. First grade teachers will be connecting remotely tomorrow.

Our music teacher, Mary, will be preparing music lessons to share within the next few days. Cindy, CMCS's resource teacher, is also available to provide assistance to the children she works with in school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher or me by email. All staff will be working from home for the next two weeks.

I will be blogging daily for the next two weeks with any updates, interesting articles, or CMCS news. Share with me anything you'd like to share or helpful tips for other parents.

I've also created a COVID-19 page on the communitymagnet.org. Click here to view the page which will also have important LAUSD and CMCS updates, links to relevant articles, important reminders.

Reminder:
We need to know whether or not your child will be returning for the 2020-2021 school year.  Please click here to complete the Google Form by March 27th in order to remain an active student at Community Magnet Charter School. If we do not receive a response from you by Friday, March 27th, we will consider your child’s spot available to be filled by a student from the waiting listing.

LAUSD Update

LAUSD's plans to open 40 resource centers have been cancelled. Instead, LAUSD with the Red Cross will open 60 Grab & Go Food Centers on Wednesday, March 18th. These Grab & Go Food Centers will be open weekdays from 7am-10am so that each child may take home two nutritional meals a day.  Locations of the centers can be found at achieve.lausd.net/resources.

That's it for today. Please check in tomorrow evening for updates.

Best,
Toni

  1. We're in Sebastian's class and were unable to log in, today. Please share the logon information so that we may participate, tomorrow!

    1. Thank you for your comment. I'll share it with Sebastian. With Zoom, the host emails a link to the student inviting them to join the meeting. Be sure to check your emails.

    2. There was nothing in our e-mail at all. One of the other parents said he would send a note on Classcraft, but there was never a note on Classcraft. Another parent said they updated the Google link, but we were not informed of this, so we missed the first day waiting for some sort of communication. Now we're a day behind on the homework, too. Hopefully today will be better, but please have them keep in communication with us through this event. That's the most important thing, to me.

    3. Could you email me at trk2932@lausd.net? You're listed as "unknown" here, so I don't know who I'm talking to.

  2. For Paul's 4th grade class, we were able to chat on the Google classroom but not meet in Google Meet. Paul has now set up a Zoom meeting for tomorrow. Looking forward to it. I hope Paul won't find me intrusive as I'll be joining in the beginning to monitor the effectiveness of this medium. I know this will be the first time many kids use online tools for classes. Ethan has had a bit of experience having already done online Chinese lessons for a couple of years. Fingers crossed...

    1. Thank you for your comment. I've shared with Paul. I'm sure he will not mind you joining in and may even appreciate your feedback. I'm confident that today will be much more successful because the teachers worked hard to troubleshoot and problem-solve yesterday. Let me know how it turns out today!

  3. It was a great 1st day of uncharted territory. Despite the kinks, it was great to see students learning from their teacher. We think we got the homework assignment correct. The kids were so excited to see each other via Zoom.

I look forward to returning to school soon. :)
