Information Exchange

Good Evening, Community Families,

Thank you for your patience and cooperation on Friday morning as we monitored the fires and the air quality on campus.  If your family is directly affected by the fires, please let us know how our school community can support you. We're here to offer whatever support we can. If you were not directly affected, I hope you were able to enjoy the weekend, even though it was a bit smoky in many areas. LAUSD has been keeping tabs on the safety of school campuses over the weekend. CMCS looks pretty clear to open as usual on Monday morning with no interruptions to bus services. If that changes, I will notify you by email immediately.

Recap of last week:
Monday was Middle School Night with 8 middle schools attending. This was a great opportunity for parents as they begin making important decisions about the next phase in their child's educational career.

Hispanic Heritage Month wrapped up with a wonderful celebration of Cuban Music and food tasting on Thursday and a special presentation at Friday morning assembly by our third grade students. Thank you to all of our third and fourth graders and their teachers for preparing such meaningful tributes to Hispanic Heritage!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
We continue to be blown away by the outpouring of community support at CMCS! Whether it's in the form of donations, time, or active support, we are so fortunate to have it and we absolutely appreciate it! However, we need to be sure that we follow district policy regarding parent volunteers. Your level of support determines the requirements that must be met in order for you to offer your much-needed support here on campus. Don't let it deter you! It is only meant to keep our students safe because, as always, that is our first priority. Please visit our Parent Volunteer page to find out the requirements for your level of volunteer support.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
We received 50 refurbished iPads last week and now have enough devices for every student. First grade students should receive their devices by the end of next week and then we will begin preparing devices for distribution to kindergarten.

Our Technology Team met last week and we discussed what's happening in classrooms with the devices. At this point, teachers are in the exploration phase with the devices. They are trying out new apps, working on opportunities for peer observations, making decisions about next steps in training, and familiarizing themselves and students with using the devices in the classroom.

The teachers have heard your concerns and questions about screen time and exactly what students will be doing on the devices. Please remember that our teachers are professionals and have the best interest of students at heart. We ask for your trust and patience as we are at the very beginning stage of technology integration at CMCS. Have daily conversations with your students about what they are doing with devices in the classrooms and if you have a concern, please contact the teacher.

I will continue to provide technology updates on a school-wide basis, such as distribution of devices, professional development for teachers, school-wide decisions and plans, parent workshops, etc. I will also continue to post photos of classes using technology in the classroom. However, any questions or concerns about what teachers are doing in the classroom should be directed to the teacher.  I have invited 5th grade teacher, Brandon, to Friday's TeaTime to briefly address some of your concerns.

Well, that's it for now, folks! There are two parent surveys linked on this blog to give input on future parent workshops and TeaTimes with Toni. I remain available to hear your ideas, suggestions,  and concerns. Visit me in my office if you're on campus (I will be away on Tuesday and Wednesday this week) or email me at trk2932@lausd.net. I respond pretty quickly, or at least I try my best. Have a great Sunday and I hope to see you tonight at Comedy Union!
