SAFETY First and ATTENDANCE Matters!
Happy Sunday Evening Community Families,
Seems this week and last are all about safety. On Monday, our Crisis Team received training on how to handle students in crisis. At Friday's Tea Time with Toni, I presented our school's Safe School Plan for 2019-2020 and Kathryn discussed district requirements for Parent Volunteers. This Tea Time presentation will soon be available on the Fresh Schools website in the Papers & Docs section. (I will be updating this blog on Monday to include the audio link.) This coming Monday, a representative from the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) will visit our campus for a safety walk-through. Staff and students will practice earthquake safety during the Great ShakeOut Drill on Thursday. Please make sure that all information on your child's emergency card is current.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!!
Our chronic absentee rate is already at 6.7%! The district goal for the year is 7%.
Please do your absolute best to save vacation time for when LAUSD schools are not in session.
Please be aware that we do not offer Independent Study for family vacations. Absences due to family vacations are considered unexcused absences. A student is considered truant after 3 unexcused absences (not necessarily consecutive). So, be sure to provide a note for all excusable absences.
Valid and excusable reasons for absences include, but are not limited to: Illness or injury of pupil; Funeral of an immediate family member (may include any relative residing with the pupil) - 1 day: in state - 3 days: out-of state and/or country; medical, dental, optometrical or chiropractic services; Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer; Attending a Pupil’s naturalization ceremony to become a United States citizen.
For any student with a history of excessive parent excused absences, schools may revoke a parent’s privilege to excuse absences.
Important Reminder: The Magnet Application window is open until November 15. Please DO NOT use the eChoices application to earn magnet points unless you are the parent of a 5th grade student applying for a Magnet Middle School. If you do and are accepted to another school, you will be dropped from Community Magnet's enrollment.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Thursday, October 24th - Great ShakeOut Drill
Friday, October 25th - Parade of Masks, 12:30- 2:15
Monday, October 28th - School Experience window opens
Friday, November 15th- Dyslexia Parent Workshop (rescheduled from November 1)
Saturday, November 16th - Community Day / School Beautification Day
I am so ready for cool, fall weather, but here we go. It looks like it will be another very warm week. At least Friday will be the coolest school day of the week for Parade of Masks! Enjoy!!
Best,
Toni
