So Much to Tell You!
Good Evening Community Families!
There's a lot of news to share this week, so this blog may be a bit long!
This past 4-day week was pretty quiet. Kindergarten and Invitational Conferences were held and mandatory parent conferences for all grades are coming up in November.
School Board Member, Nick Melvoin, visited on Friday, October 4th. He spoke with Kathryn and me on a variety of topics including: hiring requirements for teachers' assistants, admitting siblings to magnet schools, CMCS safety plan (he's going to help us), CMCS iPad grant (it'll be a few months before we find out if it's approved), CMCS safety concerns (he's working on a streamlined process to report school safety concerns), and future visits (he'd like to visit again soon).
5th grade families: The Magnet window opened on Tuesday, October 1 and will close on Friday, November 15. Click here to review the magnet application process: https://www.communitymagnet.org/application-process-1.
Middle School Night is Monday, October 7 at 5pm-7pm. There will be 9 schools participating in this event (Webster MS was a last minute add-on)! Click here to read more about it: https://www.communitymagnet.org/middle-school-night-1
There will be NO SCHOOL on Wednesday, October 9.
Hispanic Heritage Celebrations:
Thursday, October 10- Cuban Music Band and Food Tasting, 1:00 & 1:45
Friday, October 11- Third Grade Presentation at Morning Assembly
“Hearty laughter is a good way to jog internally without having to go outdoors.” – Norman Cousins
I really like this quote. If I laugh long enough and hard enough, it's almost like I'm jogging on the treadmill right? Or using the elliptical? And I could take a nice long swig of a refreshing drink, kind of like I'm drinking from my water bottle . . . at the gym . . . but I'll actually be laughing heartily at COMEDY UNION on a Sunday Night (October 13th)!!! I think it's a WIN-WIN!! Come on out to this adult-only event hosted by CMCS/CFF parents, Angel Tanksley and Matt Price! I'll see you there, right?!?
Community Council Meeting, Monday, October 14, 2:45, Library
COMMUNITY DAY (aka SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION DAY)
Save the Date: Saturday, November 16th is Community Day! Bring the whole family from 8:00am and 1:00pm to help give CMCS a much-needed make-over. This is a GREAT way for your family to work together, do great things for CMCS, and earn CMCS volunteer hours!
Please bring: safe tools and cleaning supplies to help beautify our school.
Please do not bring: scooters or bicycles.
Here are some of the school projects that need some extra TLC:
Teatime with Toni- upcoming topics
Friday, October 18: Presentation of 2019-2020 Safe School Plan
Friday, November 22: Boss of Lunch- CMCS Cafeteria Manager, Ashley Johnson, joins us to share a
brief presentation, answer a few questions, and let us sample delicious foods
from the cafeteria menu!
Parent Workshops
I am planning to provide parent workshops one Friday per month. The first Parent Workshop will be Friday, November 1st, facilitated by Bronda Everett Eagans, our APEIS, on the topic of Dyslexia. The next workshop is scheduled for Friday, December 6. The topic will be determined by you, the parents, so please complete the parent survey below and send in ASAP! Workshops will be held in Room 1 immediately following Morning Assembly.
ZOOM
For parents who are unable to join us, Teatime with Toni and the Friday Parent Workshops will be streamed online using ZOOM. Please be patient as we get comfortable using this platform! Presentations and handouts will be posted on the school websites.

communitymagnet.org
If you haven't checked lately, the Community Magnet website has undergone a bit of a transformation. We've added Faculty/Staff, Enrichment, and After-School Program pages to highlight CMCS staff and programs. The News page features the weekly blog, Community Corner, and the monthly CMCS Newsletter. The Toni Awards lists our fabulous Students of the Week, Above & Beyond Club, Kindness Counts and Toni's Treasures students. News You Can Use includes interesting and relevant news articles relating to our students, technology, and parenting. Send me an email (trk2932@lausd.net) of any articles you think may be relevant and interesting to the CMCS community and I may post them! The Gallery displays special projects around campus (see photos of local artist, Kim Abilene, as she restores her Thru the Earth pathway in front of the school). Teaching with Technology is the newest page and is in response to parent interest in how technology is being rolled out in classrooms. As I walk classrooms and see technology in use, I'll snap a photo or two and post it. I've encouraged teachers to take photos and send them in to be posted as well with a brief description of the lesson activity and technology being used. The Events page keeps you up-to-date on upcoming events. Get Involved is the page to visit for more information on Community Council, Community Family & Friends, and Volunteer Information. Feel free to email me your feedback on the website!

Technology Update
- We are still waiting to receive the remaining 50 iPads for our kindergarten classes. No iPads have been distributed to the kindergarten classes.
- First graders have not received iPads either. The carts still need to be set up and the iPads need to be assigned to the students. Unfortunately, our Technology Coordinator had an unexpected emergency last week, but we should be back on track very soon.
- All but one of the 2nd through 5th grade classes have received their Chromebook devices. You may check out the News > Teaching with Technology page of the communitymagnet.org website to see how teachers are integrating technology into the curriculum. The page will be updated each week.
That's all the news for now. I hope you had a great weekend with your families and your kiddos are excited about the wonderful week of learning ahead!
Best,
Toni
