Strengthening Our Community

Good Evening Community Family,

Community has been on my mind a lot lately. I mean, our community. I envision our community as a place where all members are valued and appreciated . . . and everyone feels it so strongly that they only want to give their best to the community. Lately, the world outside of our community seems overrun with self-serving, vindictive bullies. We watch them on TV, hear them on the radio, and even see them on the freeway! And it’s likely to get worse in coming weeks. But we can and should keep our community free of that. Our children are also watching and will emulate what they see. Let's practice the opposite of being self-serving: it's always better to give without the expectation of receiving something in return. If you only give with the expectation of receiving, it's really better not to give at all. Let's not demonstrate vindictiveness. Instead, let's show our students how to seek understanding, accept differences, and encourage diversity. And, let's help them stand against bullies rather than join them. Let them know it's ok not to have everything always go their way. Occasional disappointment and failure breed humility and strength. Compromise, collaboration, and teamwork are the best ways to get things done in a community. Bullying others to get what we want is not the Community Way!

I'm very excited about celebrating our community during Monday Morning Messages. And I am looking forward to collaborating with Council members and working beside parent volunteers for the good of the entire Community. My sincere wish is that we all just make an effort to be kind.

Monday Morning Message

Every Monday will begin with a 20-minute school-wide morning assembly. We will review the Six Pillars of Character and hear from our amazing students (Toni's Treasures) about why these character traits are so important in our community. We will celebrate our Students of the Week and Above & Beyond Club members, and shine a spotlight on selected teachers and staff members during our Staff Spotlight. Finally, we'll update you on all the news for the week. This week, you may get to meet new enrichment teachers, Chris (dance), and Erick (computer). Click here if you'd like to shine a spotlight on a staff member who has made your day or week a little brighter.

Please Join Community Council

The deadline for Council nominations has been extended to September 3rd. Community needs a few good parents to join the Council, the decision-making body for our school. Since the term of office for each grade level representative is one year, we need new parents to step in and carry the load this year. We meet once a  month to discuss issues and concerns that impact our whole school. Please consider nominating yourself or another parent who is interested in making Community better for all students. Simply complete this Council Nomination form and email to trk2932@lausd.net along with your 75-word statement of candidacy. Elections will be be held during Back-to-School Night on September 8th.

Volunteer Sign-Ups

If Council isn't quite your thing, don't fret! There's plenty more help needed. Click here to sign up to join a volunteer committee. You may also sign up at Back-to-School Night.

Thank you in advance for your commitment!!

Back-to-School Night has been moved to Tuesday, September 8th. The evening will begin with a Webinar. If you are the parent of an English Learner, please join at 5:00pm as Phyllis hosts the English Learner Program Options Meeting. The Principal's Welcome will begin at 5:30pm followed by CFF announcements. For the second half of the evening, you will join your teachers in grade-level-specific Zoom meetings. Community Council nominee introductions will be followed by elections. Then, presentations will be given by each grade level team. The meetings will be recorded in case you miss anything. Don't forget to sign up for a CFF volunteer committee.

Thank you for all you do!

Best,
