If You Want Kids to Soar, Ground Helicopter Parenting!

Hello Community Family,

My only daughter has flown the coop! Last week she made the big move to Seattle, Washington to begin her life as an adult. Those of you with older children probably understand what I'm feeling right now    - a mix of excitement, sadness, pride, fear . . .

But, I've been thinking a lot about it over the last few weeks, and I'm realizing that this whole parenting thing is by nature's design. I've made mistakes, of course, and am grateful that none have been detrimental. But as a parent, and as a teacher, I think the best thing I've done for my daughter and students has been to facilitate their growth and development, rather than control them. Children need space to grow and develop. Parents and teachers who carefully control every aspect of their child's life by making decisions for them, navigating their relationships, fighting their battles, and shielding them from disappointment and failure, are doing a huge disservice that both parent and child will regret and resent. I came across this article the other day that explains it all very well. The title is If You Want Kids to Soar, Ground Helicopter Parenting. Check it out for yourself or recommend to a friend. It's a short, but interesting read.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Hispanic Heritage Month is officially observed in the United States from September 15- October 15. This observance allows us to focus on the histories, cultures, and contributions made by Americans whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Each year, it is our tradition at CMCS to celebrate with food fairs, musical concerts, and student presentations.

Mark your calendars now for fourth grade student presentations on October 5th and second grade student presentations on October 12th during Monday Morning Messages. I know the students will be excited to share what they have been preparing.
