First Confirmed COVID Cases at CMCS

Good afternoon Community Families,

This has been a rough two weeks for parents who are eager to get their kids back in school to learn and interact with their friends and classmates, but at the same time nervous and afraid that they will be exposed to the Coronavirus. We've welcomed all 420 of our unvaccinated 5-10 year-old students back to school after 18-months of school closures/hybrid school. Our school community is very fortunate to get through the first two weeks of school with no positive cases! I consider that a WIN!!

But, alas, our good fortune has run out as we were slammed with 5 positive cases confirmed by our on-site testing program this past Friday.  (Though, whatever website parents are viewing shows 6 cases, please remember that one of those is the false positive case that I've referred to several times now.)

As we undoubtedly will continue to have positive cases on campus, we will need to have patience with the notification process. The process includes interviewing parents, students, bus drivers, teachers, Beyond the Bell and Got Game coaches, meeting with district personnel, and writing/submitting reports, all of which are especially difficult to do over the weekend and while maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all involved.

Tea Time with Toni

Tea time with Toni was well attended. I'd like to thank Dr. Gaeta, our West LA COSA, for attending an answering parent questions. Topics included traffic / valet concerns and COVID safety protocols. As discussed, we are strengthening safety protocols at CMCS:

  • All bus drivers are developing seating charts as required by Bus Transportation. This will help track positive COVID cases.
  • There are concerns that not all doors and windows are open to provide maximum ventilation in classrooms.
    • This is what district policy says about optimizing ventilation and circulation: Doors and windows may remain open in classrooms during instruction to maximize air flow with HVAC operating, as weather permits.
  • Teachers have been reminded that students are not to unmask for any reason while in the classroom. Snacks and drinks must be consumed outdoors.
  • Parents request that the entire school community be notified of positive test cases on campus.
  • Teachers have been reminded to provide plenty of opportunities for hand washing, not just sanitizing.
