SAFETY FIRST and UPCOMING EVENTS

Good evening Community Families,

Our first week of school flew by so quickly! Only a handful of our students opted for the online City of Angels program, so we welcomed most of our students back to in-person instruction this week. And what a week it's been! We're all geared up and ready for Week 2!

SAFETY FIRST!!

My biggest concern this week has been traffic safety. Many families are still hesitant to send their students on the buses, so our valet lines have been longer than ever. This has caused some traffic concerns.

1) In order to avoid the long valet line, some families park on the street and walk up to campus. Students have been observed running ahead of or trailing far behind their parents. Frustrated drivers sometimes aggressively swerve into the opposite lanes to speed past the long line of cars and its not always easy to see what's ahead. It's an accident waiting to happen, so parents are advised to be alert and keep their children very close as they cross the street through heavy traffic.

2) Some families choose to park in the visitor's lot, then walk their children through the parking lot to or from campus. I strongly encourage families to use the valet line to avoid walking children through the visitor's parking lot. Students are not allowed to walk through the parking lot, with or without parents, because it's not safe.

3) Our neighbors have been complaining to me about the clogged traffic and about our families parking in front of and blocking their driveways. Please respect our neighbors. CMCS has enjoyed a great relationship with our Bel Air neighbors since moving to the campus 20 years ago. Let's not threaten that relationship - we love our neighbors!

School Bus Safety will be the topic of this week's virtual student assembly. The presentation will be posted on the website under the "From the Principal" tab.

DAILY PASS

The Daily Pass has become an integral part of our school day. Our students and staff check in each morning with the Daily Pass. Thank you for using the Daily Pass. Families using valet may show the Daily Pass on their cell phones. The student received a sticker to show at
check in which makes the check-inline go much faster. Students who have hard copies of their Daily Pass QR codes are asked to have their copies out and ready to show at check in. Again, this makes our check in lines go much faster. No worries, though, if your child does not have the Daily Pass QR code. They simply need to answer the screening questions to get through check in. As long as students have record of a recent COVID test, which I have on file, they're all good to go. If your child is absent on the Friday COVID testing day, please be sure to have him/her/they tested over the weekend.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES BEGIN THIS WEEK!

Enrichment classes begin this week!! Here is what we have in store for our students . . .

LIBRARY
Sarah Lilly is our beloved librarian. She is a gifted storyteller and brings life to every book she reads. Visiting her library is especially fun because you'll get to meet Sarah's pet mouse, Little Dumpling

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Our returning students know Coach Andy, as he has been a part of our enrichment staff for years. Well, Coach Andy has been promoted and will no longer be serving CMCS directly. Joining us this year will be Coach Zachary who is highly recommended by both Coach K and Coach Andy. Welcome, Coach Zachary!! All students, K-5, will have PE twice each week, once with their own class, then again with the entire grade level.

TECHNOLOGY

Erick, from ComputerWise Kids, will be working with our students again this year. He was busy this past week planning and preparing the computer lab for our students. This year, we're very excited to add ROBOTICS to the technology curriculum! Erick will be visiting every classroom, K-5, to teach students on their own assigned devices. (Gr. K-1 use iPads, Gr. 2-5 use Chromebooks.) On Fridays, classes will visit the computer lab on a rotating basis throughout the year to receive instruction in Robotics. First up in the rotation are Rooms 6, 9, 13, 16, 18, and 22.

VOCAL MUSIC

Mary returns as our vocal music teacher on Mondays and Tuesdays. She will teach Grades  K-3 every week, and Gr. 4-5 classes on a rotating basis. Our students love to learn and sing a variety of songs with Mary that celebrate diversity and multiculturalism.

DANCE
Christopher returns for a second year teaching tap and hip hop dance. Two years ago, dancers from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy came to CMCS to entertain our students. Everyone loved the dancers so much that we decided to recruit Christopher to teach our students. Boys and girls alike love to dance with Christopher. This year should be especially great because Christopher will be teaching in-person!! Students in Gr. K-4 will receive dance instruction on a rotating basis every Tuesday.

VISUAL ARTS

Kathleen teaches visual arts on Wednesdays to all students, K-5, on a rotating basis. Her art instruction focuses on nature themes and instill a sense of responsibility for our world and environment. You will find an example of her beautiful artwork in the trees right outside of the main office!

AFTER-SCHOOL CARE

Beyond the Bell, Youth Services
Josh returns as the YS Coach serving students in Gr. 2-5. This free program runs Monday through Friday from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. and will be based in Room 1. Students have time to work on homework, play games, and have a hot supper provided by our school cafeteria.

Got Game Camp
Got Game Camp debuts this week as our paid after-school enrichment program this year! The program serves all students, Gr. K-5, and offers a variety of enrichment and sports activities. This program runs Monday through Friday from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. and will be          based in Room 26, the pink bungalow.
