Back-to-School Night is Thursday!

      ENRICHMENT BLOCKS BEGIN THIS WEEK!

Dear Community Families,

We now have our first week of school under our belts! Students know where their classrooms are, who their teachers are, and their bus assignments. Teachers have introduced classroom systems and procedures, and our school-wide behavior expectations were reviewed during behavior assemblies.

On Thursday, we practiced our first fire drill of the year. Students learned how to evacuate quickly and quietly to the upper yard.

Friday marked our first Morning Assembly of the year! Each week, teachers select a Student-of-the-Week to recognize for achievement and positive contributions. Honorees receive a certificate and a prize from the Treasure Box. In addition, staff members issue Kindness Counts coupons to students who demonstrate kindness and good citizenship. These coupons are entered into a drawing at the assembly for additional recognition. Assemblies are also a time to show school spirit by wearing CMCS Spirit Gear. The class with the most spirit gear earns “Community Cash,” which may be used toward a classroom party or special prize.

This week, Beginning-of-Year (BOY) assessments in reading and math will continue across all grade levels. Newly enrolled English Learners will also take the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California).

We are excited to launch our Enrichment Blocks this week! Every student participates in PE and Technology weekly, and also rotates through Vocal Music, Dance, Drama, and Visual Art. Below is the schedule for this semester:

  • PE – Coach Dareh (Got Game) | Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
  • Technology/Robotics – Tiffany (ComputerWise Kids) | Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
  • Vocal Music – Mary | Mondays
  • Dance – Myko | Tuesdays
  • Drama – Melissa (24th Street Theater) | Wednesdays
  • Visual Art – Kathleen  | Wednesdays
  • District Visual Art Teacher | Wednesdays
  • Chess – Jessica | Beginning week of August 26 (lunch, optional)
  • Library – Sarah Lilly | Monday–Friday

We are off to a wonderful start, and I look forward to an exciting year of learning, growth, and community.

Best,
Toni

TIPS FOR PACKING SCHOOL LUNCHES WHEN ITS HOT OUTSIDE!

PLEASE AVOID SENDING PERISHABLE FOOD IN LUNCHES ON HOT DAYS!  When the forecast predicts temperatures of 90°F or higher by noon, we will provide insulated food bags to store lunches. On these days, please refrain from sending hot lunches, as we will only be storing cool or cold lunches.

When leaving perishable food outdoors (like a packed school lunch) it's crucial to be aware of the "Danger Zone" to prevent bacteria from multiplying rapidly and making the food unsafe.
Here's how long food can safely be left outdoors at different temperatures:
  • Temperatures between 40°F and 140°F: Food should not be left out for more than 2 hours.
  • Temperatures above 90°F: Food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.
To ensure food safety in school lunches left outdoors, consider these additional points:
  • Choose the Right Container: Use insulated lunchboxes or bags to help maintain temperature.
  • Utilize Cold Sources: Include at least two cold sources, such as frozen gel packs, frozen juice boxes, or frozen bottled water, with perishable items.
  • Keep Hot Foods Hot: Use an insulated container for hot foods like soup, chili, or stew. Before packing, fill the container with boiling water and let it stand for a few minutes. Empty it and then add the hot food, keeping the lid closed until lunchtime.
  • Consider Non-Perishable Options: Include items that don't require refrigeration like whole fruits and vegetables, hard cheeses, canned meat and fish, chips, bread, crackers, peanut butter, and jelly.
  • Refrigerate or Freeze: Pack lunches right before leaving home, refrigerate prepared foods until then, and ideally, store perishable items in a refrigerator at school (if available) with the lid or bag open for better circulation.
  • Discard Leftovers: It's best to discard any leftover perishable food after lunch, and avoid reusing disposable packaging.

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE . . .

SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY!

Students need to come to school every day. When possible, please schedule your child’s medical appointments outside of school hours. (See the bell schedule for our school hours.) If you must schedule an appointment during school hours, please check in at the main office to pick up/drop off your child.

The following types of absences are excused: illness, doctor’s appointments, funerals, family emergencies, court dates, religious observances, etc. Examples of unexcused absences include: vacations, “we slept in,” “we took a family day,” “we went to Disneyland for her birthday,” "we visited relatives out of state/country," etc. Even if you send in a note to explain the absence, those examples would be designated as unexcused. For more information, please refer to LAUSD’s Attendance Guide.

You may know that LAUSD has an Independent Study program. This program is intended to provide make-up classwork for students who must miss school for legitimate long-term absences (for example, needing to go out of town for a death in the family, quarantine/lengthy stay at home for serious illness, or needing to make a visa appointment in a home country). Independent Study is NOT for “we are taking 2 weeks off and going abroad,” or “we are starting our Winter Break 10 days early.” For Independent Study in excess of 15 days, you must enroll in the online City of Angels program.

VALET RULES
For the SAFETY of your child and ALL children and parents at CMCS, if you are driving your child to school you MUST follow these valet rules.
    • Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
    • Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
    • Drive along the left curb.  The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
    • Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
    • When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb.  There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
    • Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car.  Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
    • When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle.  IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
    • Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
    • Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb.  The line is single file from the east gate entrance  through to the west gate exit.  Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
    • FINALLY, be patient and kind.  The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children.  Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.
