Get Ready to Shake Out!
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2025
Click here to read more about The Great ShakeOut.
All students and staff will practice to drop, cover, and hold on in case of an earthquake.
Dear Community Families,
Digital Citizenship Week kicks off on Monday with classroom lessons and activities focused on what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. Students will explore key digital skills, including how to communicate respectfully online, protect their privacy, and identify reliable sources of information. Family resources are available below to help support each child’s journey toward positive and safe digital citizenship.
This Thursday, all staff and students will participate in The Great Shake Out. This earthquake drill will begin with simulated earthquake audio played over the PA system. At this signal, teachers and students will drop, cover, and hold on in their classrooms until the “shaking” stops. They will then evacuate quickly and quietly to the upper yard, where teams will account for all students and staff. Following this, CMCS emergency response teams will activate and carry out their assigned roles.
Parent participation is an important part of this exercise. Please contact Lynda, CFF President, if available to assist. About ten parent volunteers are needed to help test our reunification procedures. Those interested in learning more about the school’s Safety Plan can view the presentation here.
Last week, invitations were sent to selected students to join our after-school intervention program. Each grade level is supported by CMCS teachers who provide targeted small-group instruction for students who may benefit from additional academic support. The program takes place every Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Students enjoy a supper snack at dismissal before heading to their classrooms at 2:45. Late buses are available for intervention students, with stops at Chandler ES, Wilshire Crest ES, and Windsor Hills ES. If your child was invited to participate and you have not yet responded, please let us know as soon as possible—intervention begins this Wednesday.
Congratulations to our first group of Above & Beyond students this year! Every six weeks, teachers select two students from their classes who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, effort, citizenship, or made a meaningful contribution in some way. These outstanding students are celebrated with an early lunch, a fun movie and popsicles, and special gifts—including a book of their choice with a CMCS nameplate, an In-N-Out coupon, and a CMCS magnet.
Take a look at the sweet and silly photos of this amazing Above & Beyond group!
A heartfelt thank you to the parents who generously gave their time and energy to help us move back into the main office this week! Our school community is so fortunate to have parents who are always ready to lend a hand whenever needed.
Special thanks to:
- Erica Allen (Langston, Gr. K)
- Taylor Fitz-Gibbons (Karolene, Gr. 1)
- Katie Taylor (Georgia, Gr. 2)
- Alexandra Binder (Amelia, Gr. K; Abigail, Gr. 4)
- April Edison (Serenity, Gr. 4)
Your help and support are truly appreciated. Thank you for making a difference!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making CMCS a strong, caring, and connected community. Together, we create an environment where every student can thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.
Best,
Toni

A NOTE FROM THE CMCS MATH CLUB . . .
Dear MC Families,
The primary purpose of this event is to give our Mathletes practice in math MK competition. We will be simulating as close as possible the atmosphere of competition day.
Finally, we will be sending out an email (soon!) to parent coach volunteers to get you all orientated and ready for this upcoming session. Please visit our club site to access the curriculum.
Also (ok, so there's more!), our club was invited by Virginia Wang, the CA Director of MK to participate in her local Number Tournament held in Arcadia. Please email cmcsmathclub@gmail.com if your student is interested in either competing individually or as a team. More info at this link:
Also, for 4th and 5th grade members, there is a local one day MOEMS tournament held in early March in Culver city. It is both an individual as well as a team tournament. (5 members). MOEMS at elementary level is a nice transition for middle school competitions like (AMC/Mathcounts).If you are interested in participating please email our parent volunteer organizer, Linh Luu, for this event for more info:
Excited to see everyone at club this year!

IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT CHANGES TO YOUR DAILY TRANSPORTATION PLAN
As you know, we have several after-school activities at Community. There's Kids 4 College camp, musical theater, math kangaroo, Tuesday enrichment, intervention, and tutoring. Later in the year, we'll also have late field trips. Getting students to their buses after dismissal has become a challenge. Late notifications of last minute changes in transportation plans exacerbate the problem. In order to help us get your students off smoothly at the end of the day, we ask that you please call the main office before 12:00 pm to notify us of any changes to your transportation plans. Since Kathryn does not always get to her email in time, I encourage you not to email her with these changes. In order to get the message into the bus book and out to classes before dismissal, it is very important that you notify the office in a timely manner. Every day, buses sit and wait as we try to get last minute messages to students. Too many times, we've had to stop the bus and get a child off or have the bus return to school to pick up a child because of late communication. The students have a long enough ride and the late notifications add more time to the commute.
Please always call before 12pm.
- Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
- Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
- Drive along the left curb. The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
- Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
- When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb. There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
- Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car. Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
- When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle. IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
- Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
- Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb. The line is single file from the east gate entrance through to the west gate exit. Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
- FINALLY, be patient and kind. The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children. Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.
