An (Un) Eventful Week

Good Evening Community Families,

School will be closed again on Monday. Check your email and the LAUSD website for updates.

What an (un) eventful week!
The big event of the week, Parade of Masks, was postponed due to the other big event of the week, wildfires across the area. On Thursday, after most of the students and staff had gone home for the day, Josh came to tell me that he saw lots of smoke coming from behind the hills to the north. Within minutes, the smell of smoke was thick and wisps of ash were floating in the air. Coach Mike and Josh sheltered-in-place with their students until about 6pm when the last of the parents arrived to pick up their children.        PLEASE GIVE A BIG THANK YOU TO COACHES MIKE AND JOSH FOR KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE DURING THE SHELTER-IN-PLACE ON FRIDAY!!!!

Great ShakeOut Drill
Earlier Thursday, all staff and students practiced the annual Great ShakeOut. We simulated an earthquake with shaking sounds over the PA system. All students and staff dropped, covered, and held on until the "shaking" stopped. Then everyone evacuated quickly (and very quietly!) to the upper yard and lined up at their assigned areas. Teachers took roll and turned in their accountability sheets to let the Command Center know which students were "missing". (Kathryn had pre-selected responsible students to remain behind and be "found" and "rescued" by our Search & Rescue teams). Students were supervised by the Assembly Team as all other emergency teams were deployed for their duties. It was pretty hot, so Phyllis moved students to shady areas to stay cool while they waited. Before we knew it, all "missing" students had been found and rescued, all emergency teams had completed their duties, everyone had been accounted for, and our drill was over!

CMCS Safety Inspection
Earlier in the week, our school was visited by a representative from LAUSD's Office of Environmental Health and Safety. Kathryn and I walked the campus with the OEHS representative as we inspected classrooms and  buildings around campus.  The rep. said that CMCS is one of the better schools she's seen. One of our biggest health and safety issues is the overgrowth of unkempt plants because they may attract rodents onto our campus. Thank goodness for . . .

Community Beautification Day!!!
It's coming on November 16, 8:00am-12:00pm. Be on the lookout for volunteer sign-up sheets in Fresh Schools and don't forget to count these as volunteer points. Besides gardening, we'll need help cleaning tables and sports equipment,  repairing planters, and completing teacher wish-lists. Lunch will be provided from 12pm to 1pm, followed by our first CFF Town Hall Meeting from 1-2pm. Stay-tuned for more information on the Town Hall Meeting where we will be discussing important CMCS topics!  We are counting on maximum family support for this very important combo of events! YOU ASKED HOW YOU COULD HELP . . . WELL THIS IS IT! We truly hope to see you there: November 16th - - 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!

Parade of Masks
The Parade of Masks has been rescheduled for Friday, November 1st. Everything will remain the same: same time (12:30-2:15), same activities, etc.. Please bring your baked goods on the day of the event. Please do not send candy or costumes on Halloween (Thursday). And thank you so much for your understanding and support!

School Pictures
Wondering where your child's school pictures are? Orders were expected to be delivered Friday. Kathryn checked with the representative who says we should receive school pictures this week.      We will send via backpacks when they arrive.

CMCS Behavior
One thing that really drew me to CMCS was the Friday Morning Assembly. I loved that all students came together each Friday to learn lessons on character and the importance of being kind humans. Well, as your new principal, I admit that I am having a hard time finding my TIMING with the morning assemblies!  I can't believe how much there is to get done in 15 minutes! Student of the Week, Kindness Counts, Toni's Treasures, Spirit T-Shirt Count + weekly presentations! Oh My!! BUT, I'm getting the hang of it. Now that I'm getting speedier with the Student of the Week, my next goal is to make time each Friday to address character development or one of the four Bes: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Trustworthy. Since we missed Friday Morning Assembly last week, we will be having a MONDAY MORNING ASSEMBLY and I will be addressing our students' lunch and recess behavior. We all need reminders of the basic rules and expectations for behavior. It always helps if you follow up with a conversation with your child about appropriate behaviors at school. We appreciate your amazing support and cooperation.

The 2019-2020 School Experience Survey (SES)
The 2019-2020 School Experience Survey (SES) will be mailed home on Monday. Each family will only receive one SES, even if you have more than one child at CMCS. It is very important that you take the time to complete and return the School Experience Survey. Parents answer questions about our school's academics and school climate. Your anonymous responses help CMCS staff learn our areas of strength and where we need to grow. Thank you for your feedback!

Enrichment Classes in PrimeTime Sports?
PrimeTime Sports may be adding enrichment classes in January! Quite a few of our very own CMCS teachers have expressed interest in teaching the enrichment classes themselves!! The idea for this venture is in the wee beginning stages, so there are no answers to your questions yet. We just need your input right now. Would you be interested in having your K-5 child participate in after-school enrichment classes at CMCS??  If so, shoot me an email (trk2932@lausd.net) describing the types of enrichment classes you'd like PrimeTime to provide. Don't forget to include your child's grade level.

*Currently, Primetime students participate in enrichment activities such as sports, art academy, and craft corner, and our younger students are enjoying those activities. However, our older students are beginning to leave the program. PrimeTime wants to keep all students engaged, which is why we're asking what enrichment classes interest the CMCS community!

That's all for now, folks!  Enjoy your Sunday evening!
