Principals for the Day

Principal Landon and Principal Mallory were busy, busy, busy performing principal duties this past Friday! Their first acts as principals were to add 3 minutes to each recess and to decree Pajama Day for all students and staff.

Their first task of the day was to visit each classroom with Phyllis and Kathryn to take Pajama Day photos for the yearbook. During
recess duty, Principals Mallory and Landon delegated tasks to Andrew and were very impressed with how well he got the job done. Then, it was back to the office to assist Lalita and Maria with a few office duties.

Before long, it was time for lunch. Principals Mallory and Landon invited pals, Vivienne and Kameron, for a delicious lunch of cheese and pepperoni pizzas as they read Kindness Counts and Toni's Treasures coupons with Toni. We were all amazed at how kind the
Community students can be! We ended lunch by sharing delicious vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with the office staff.

After lunch, we joined Mallory's classmates in the library to hear Sarah Lilly read, Principal for a Day, a story about a troublemaker, Jackson, who becomes Principal for the Day at his own school. He realizes that, if he really wants to be a principal some day, he'll have to change his ways.

Principals Landon and Mallory were so impressed with how hard our school's teachers and staff work that they wanted to negotiate a big fat raise for  EVERYONE! Unfortunately, raises were not in the budget. But, in the end, we settled on raises for Maria,
Andrew, Paul, and Jackie. Principals Mallory and Landon even hand-delivered the $4 checks!

 QUAKE!!

At about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, CMCS students and staff heard the first rumblings of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake followed seconds later by an aftershock. Everyone dropped, covered, and held on until all shaking ceased. Emergency teams immediately secured the campus and shut off gas lines. Other teams unloaded emergency supplies and equipment from the emergency bin on the upper yard. Teachers and TAs grabbed emergency backpacks and quickly guided students to line up quietly and evacuate to the upper yard. Once all students and staff had been accounted for, Search & Rescue teams went into action. Search teams found four injured students in various locations around campus. Rescue teams carried these students to safety on the upper yard where our Triage teams provided medical and psychological first aid. Request and Reunion teams worked with student council runners to reunite a couple of parents with their students. During the entire drill, which lasted about 45 minutes, the Assembly Area team and other staff supervised students who remained quiet and calm. During the Spring district-wide emergency drill, we will practice a campus lockdown.

RULES & REMINDERS

Valet Etiquette

As you know, we teach our students to always BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, AND BE TRUSTWORTHY! Sometimes, we as adults, need gentle reminders, too!

Here is a very important reminder about Valet Safety. Please read and heed:

It is imperative that everyone follow proper procedure with regard to the valet service. It has come to our attention that parents are walking students from the school to cars parked in the visitor’s lot and walking with students between the parked buses. For the safety of ALL students, please abide by the following rules both in the morning (7:30-8:15) and afternoon (2:15-3:00):

1. DO NOT enter through the exit gate. Enter only through the east gate.
2. Children are NOT allowed in the parking lot during the carpool hours (7:30am-8:15am and 2:15pm-3:00pm).
3. ALL students should load and unload at the curbside only. In the morning, please drop your student at the valet curb, and then park in the visitor’s lot if you are staying on campus. If you are parked in the school lot in the afternoon, your student must wait at valet for you to pull your car around. You do not have to go to the end of the valet line; simply pull around to the valet curb. The valet attendant will direct you.
4. NEVER walk a student between the parked buses! The valet attendant will cross you and your student to the other side if your car is parked on the street.
5. NEVER leave your car unattended in the valet line.
6. DO NOT try to drive between the buses and the line of valet cars.
7. Be patient when using the valet service.
8. Drive SLOWLY on school grounds.

Also, every valet parent was supplied with a paper placard with your child's name. It would help so much if every valet parent would display this placard in the windshield at pm pick up. If you need a placard, just let us know. We appreciate your cooperation!

Please, let’s all remember that even if you are in a rush, it’s important to be civil and courteous…our kids are watching!

Again, thank you for your cooperation.

Phones and Other Devices on Campus

This is a reminder that students shall not have cell phones and/or other electronic devices visible or in use on campus before, during, or after school, during after-school programs, or on the school bus. The exception, of course, would be the use of school-issued devices under the guidance and with permission from the classroom teacher. If your child has a specific health need requiring the use of a phone on campus, please speak to the principal prior to allowing your child to use the phone at school. Otherwise, all phones and other electronic devices will be confiscated by any staff member who sees the device and given to the principal. Parents will need to schedule a conference with the principal in order to redeem the device.
