Honoring All Who Served

Honoring All Who Served

On Friday, November 11th, we  will honor all of the brave veterans who sacrificed so much for our country. Read on to learn the history of Veterans Day.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The Read-a-Thon is On!

Getting-it-Done Day!

I want to take the time to thank an amazing group of CMCS parents! These parents pooled their resources, brought in their own equipment, and donated their time and energy to clean up our campus and prepare it for planting! Warren (Abijah, Gr. 2) organized a group of dads, Charles (Billie, Gr. 1), Eduardo (Ella, Gr. 2), Marlin (June, Gr. 3), and Howard and Lisa (Bei-hai, Gr. K) rounded out this awesome group.

Eduardo arranged for a huge dumpster to be delivered to campus on Friday. By late Saturday morning, the dumpster was filled with piles of junk and debris! With not a minute to rest, the group turned their attention to weeding, preparing the planter beds for new plants, and removing several succulents from dilapidated wooden planters. Lisa and I tackled an overgrown rosemary bush that needed replanting. Lisa really put her back into it (while I put my back out) trying to get that darned bush out of the pot. Finally, with the help of Howard and Warren, the rosemary bush was free! Now, it has a new home right next to a beautiful, but very thirsty, pomegranate tree. Bei-hai, Billie, and her little sister helped out by straightening up the kinder houses and watering the plants. All in all, it was quite a productive day.

Next on the to-do list is to design our reading garden. If you've shown interest in working on the design, you will receive more information soon.

Let me know if you are available during school hours to do some light planting around campus!

CATCH IS BACK!!

Have you heard? CATCH is back!!  CATCH stands for Caring Adults Teaching Children How. The program is focused on helping students navigate academically and socially. Currently, we have three stars leading the program. Karyn continues to work with students in kindergarten through 2nd grade and Wanda, new to the team,  works one-on-one with students in Gr. 3-5. Emily, an actual rocket scientist (!), engages a  select group of upper grade students in advanced math/science activities. These three amazing women make up the strong foundation of the CATCH program this year. We are hoping to invite mentors to the program in the coming months. Sending big thanks to Linda Weissler, former CATCH coordinator, for her support in getting the program started this year. We hope to have her back on campus soon!

We urge all parents to complete the School Experience Survey (SES) this year! When you complete this survey about your experience at Community Magnet Charter School, you help us make improvements and decisions for our school.  We value your opinion and need your feedback!   Click here to take the survey.

Parent Involvement is one category surveyed on the SES. Last year, 93% of parents surveyed gave CMCS high marks for parent involvement. Why?
  • 95% of parents attend events in-person and on-line, like parent conferences, assemblies, and school performances.
    • CMCS goes above and beyond by holding Invitational Parent Conferences after six weeks of school.
    • Parent conferences are this week and next! Please meet with your child's teacher November 7-18th.
    • Our first and third grade students performed at the Latino Heritage assemblies on November 2. Parents of first and third grade students were invited to attend.
    • Parents are invited to tune in to our on-line Friday Morning Assemblies.
    • Parents are welcome to attend Tea Time with Toni each month. Tea Time will move from on-line to in-person meetings within the next couple of months.
  • 88% of  parents felt comfortable supporting their child's use of technology at home to access and complete assignments.
    • Many CMCS students received Chrome-books (device.lausd.com) for use at home.
    • During Back-to-School Night, teachers provided parents with important information regarding expectations for technology use at home.
    • Please let us know how we can better support you!  😊
  • 97% of CMCS parents have visited our website to get information and/or access resources. Visit  communitymagnet.org for up-date information on all things CMCS!!

Emergency Plans

At Community Magnet CS, monthly safety drills provide important opportunities for students, teachers, and staff to practice for a variety  of emergency scenarios. We practice monthly fire and drop & cover drills. On October 20, we practiced evacuating after a simulated earthquake and after-shock. In the spring, we practice a district-wide lockdown and/or shelter-in-place drill.

While students and staff practice regularly, safety committee members, Howard C. (Bei-Hai, Gr. K) and Ben D. (Ben, Gr. 3, and Luke, Gr. K) pointed out that parents may not know what to do or expect. Do you know what to do or expect? Here are answers to questions you may have . . .

How do parents get information in the event of an emergency?

  • In the event of an emergency on or around our campus, you should expect a notification via email, phone message, or text through LAUSD's Blackboard Connect system with information as soon as possible after the emergency. Please do not call the school so that we may keep our lines open and available for communication with emergency responders and LAUSD operations.

Where do parents meet their children in the case of relocation from campus?

  • In the event that students and staff must relocate from our campus during an emergency, you will be notified as soon as possible.
  • Our Safe School Plan lists two relocation sites near our school:
    • Westwood Recreation Center (PRIMARY OFFSITE LOCATION)        1350 Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA  90025                (310) 473-3610
    • UCLA (BACK-UP OFFSITE LOCATION)                                             405 Hilgard Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90024                              (310) 825-5689

What will parents/guardians need to do in order to reunite with our children after an emergency?

  • Please bring picture identification with you to the reunion area whether on our school campus or at a relocation site. Yes, we know who you are, but in the event of an emergency, someone who may not know you may be working the request / reunion gates.
  • If someone other than you, the parent, will be picking up your child, that person must show picture identification and be listed on the child's emergency card. Please update the card when any information changes, such as phone number, address, or emergency contacts.
  • Please do not rush to the school campus after an emergency. Wait for information and or instructions from the school.

We are still hoping to find two wonderful people to run our after-school program through Beyond the Bell. If you know anyone who may be interested, please have them call our office or email me at trk2932@lausd.net. We count on our parents for a lot, and we're here again asking for your support in this. I have exhausted all of my options.   AND, we also still need TAs!

LAUSD/SCHOOL POLICY ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL

CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND OTHER MOBILE DEVICES It is the policy of LA Unified to prohibit the use of cellular phones or any electronic mobile device by students on campus during normal school hours. Students are permitted to possess cellular phones, or other electronic mobile devices such as cameras, electronic games, radios, MP3 players, computing devices, tablets, etc. on campus, provided that any such device shall remain turned off and stored in a locker, backpack, purse, pocket, or other places where it is not visible during normal school hours. Students are permitted to use cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices on campus, before and after school or during school activities that occur outside of school hours. For LA Unified, state, and national assessments, students are prohibited to access any unauthorized electronic devices at any time during the entire testing session. Students must comply any time a request is made by school personnel to cease the use of a cellular phone and/or other electronic mobile device even before or after school. Schools may adopt more stringent cellular phone policies through the School Site Council. Cellular phone use on the school bus is for emergency purposes only; driver authorization is required. For more information, you may call Transportation Services at (800) 522-8737. LA Unified is not responsible for lost or stolen cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices.

If a student is found using and/or displaying a cell phone, it will be taken away to be returned to a parent upon request.

You may find this information in the Parent-Student Handbook  (page 6) which is posted on our school website under the Resources tab. A hard copy of the handbook should have been sent home by the teacher. If not, please let me know. Also, please let me know if you have any questions regarding this LAUSD policy at trk2932@laud.net.
