HONORING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WITH ART

THE ABOVE & BEYOND CLUB
January 2023

Congratulations to this awesome group of Above & Beyond members! Each teacher selected two students who have gone "above and beyond" in the classroom in effort, academic achievement, behavior, or character. Above and Beyond members enjoyed a casual lunch, a movie in the auditorium, a delicious popsicle, a free book of their choice, an In & Out coupon, and a Community Magnet car/refrigerator magnet. Nice job!!!

 COVID CONFUSION!

This past week was a confusing one as far as COVID testing procedures are concerned. Here are the COVID policies we have in place:

This school year, we encourage parents to administer a rapid antigen test after each holiday, including three-day weekends. Two rapid antigen tests were sent home for each student to test before returning from the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and to use after February's Presidents Day. Parents only need to upload these results to the dailypass.lausd.net if the results are positive. Then, you would follow COVID protocols.

We have also shifted protocols for close contacts. Close contacts are students or staff who have been within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more of someone with COVID. Close contacts are reported to our district's COVID Community Engagement team. Close contacts are required to test within 3-5 days after exposure and upload the results, positive or negative, to dailypass.lausd.net. If test results are not uploaded to the dailypass.lausd.net by the 6th day, the student will not be admitted to school!

Since our return from winter break, we've had a few positive COVID cases at Community. We were fortunate that some of these cases were identified before returning from winter break and the students immediately went into quarantine before returning to school. However, some positive cases were not identified until after returning to school. Close contacts of these positive cases were notified during the same week we sent home instructions for testing over the 3-day weekend, hence the confusion.

If it happens that you receive multiple rapid antigen tests from school, please be sure to read the instructions sent home with the tests. Close contact cases take precedence over general school-wide testing after a holiday, so you should then upload the results regardless of whether the result is negative or positive.

It is very important that close contacts, whether on the bus or in the classroom, mask for 10 days following exposure, test within 3-5 days following exposure, and monitor for COVID symptoms. I know we are all SICK of COVID (no pun intended), but we must remain vigilant if we are to keep our school community healthy and safe. We thank you for your patience and cooperation!!

LAUSD/SCHOOL POLICY ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL

CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND OTHER MOBILE DEVICES It is the policy of LA Unified to prohibit the use of cellular phones or any electronic mobile device by students on campus during normal school hours. Students are permitted to possess cellular phones, or other electronic mobile devices such as cameras, electronic games, radios, MP3 players, computing devices, tablets, etc. on campus, provided that any such device shall remain turned off and stored in a locker, backpack, purse, pocket, or other places where it is not visible during normal school hours. Students are permitted to use cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices on campus, before and after school or during school activities that occur outside of school hours. For LA Unified, state, and national assessments, students are prohibited to access any unauthorized electronic devices at any time during the entire testing session. Students must comply any time a request is made by school personnel to cease the use of a cellular phone and/or other electronic mobile device even before or after school. Schools may adopt more stringent cellular phone policies through the School Site Council. Cellular phone use on the school bus is for emergency purposes only; driver authorization is required. For more information, you may call Transportation Services at (800) 522-8737. LA Unified is not responsible for lost or stolen cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices.

If a student is found using and/or displaying a cell phone, it will be taken away to be returned to a parent upon request.

You may find this information in the Parent-Student Handbook  (page 6) which is posted on our school website under the Resources tab. A hard copy of the handbook should have been sent home by the teacher. If not, please let me know. Also, please let me know if you have any questions regarding this LAUSD policy at trk2932@laud.net.
