IMPORTANT FOR ALL FAMILIES!!!

All parents, new and returning, must complete a Household Income Form (HIF) to maximize our school's funding for the next 4 years. In order to qualify for the 4 years of funding, we must have all applications for new and returning students completed by October 30, 2023. Please click here to complete the form online.

TEACHER COMMUNICATION

The question of teacher response time to parent emails came up at the end of last school year. Our school policy is that teachers respond to emails within 48 hours of receipt, not including weekends or holidays.  If you have sent an email and received no response within 48 hours, send a follow-up email just in case your email was missed. Please cc the principal on the follow-up email.

IMMUNIZATION COMPLIANCE

All students enrolled in California schools must present immunization records or medical exemption documentation upon admission to school unless there are special circumstances. In order to assist parents in providing immunization records, LAUSD has launched Vive's Immunization Assistant Tool. Parents must have a Parent Portal account to access this helpful tool. (Click here to watch a quick video on how to create a Parent Portal account.)  The state of California no longer allows religious or personal belief exemptions (Health and Safety Code section 120325). Only medical exemptions are allowed.

IT'S BEEN A BUSY SUMMER!!

CMCS MVP, Delia H. (mother of George and Freddy, wife of Jeff P.), poured her ALL into CMCS this summer! She single-handedly repainted the U.S. map in the front courtyard outside of the Martha Melinda auditorium. This will turn out to be a 4-week process which involves power-washing the old map away, drawing an outline of the new map, filling it in with bright bold colors, and labelling each state with the name and picture, and sealing it all! AT THE SAME TIME, she completely redecorated the teacher's lounge with a mural, fresh paint, new furniture, and decoration. And don't forget the record-breaking heat these last few weeks. She arrived super-early every morning and worked throughout each day, despite the heat. Delia, YOU ARE AMAZING! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY!

LAUSD crew repaved the service drive and areas along the breezeway.  Our campus is a little safer than when you left it last school year! We also had our security camera and buzzer system installed in the main and magnet offices.

Albert and Rick deep-cleaned every classroom, all restrooms, the main and magnet offices, library, and cafeteria this summer while working around Invention Camp, the Young Black Scholars academy, and Kinder Camp! Albert also supervised the many district workers who dropped by to make various repairs throughout the summer. Hats off to this hard-working team that does it all with a healthy dose of good humor!

Our three kindergarten teachers, Marie, Fanahi, and Maria hosted almost 50 new kindergarten students in Kinder Camp this past week. These new students practiced beginning skills, became familiar with the CMCS campus, met their teachers, and made new friends.

Welcome, kindergarten families!!

Got Game lead coach, Jocelyne, supported Kinder Camp and the Young Black Scholars program with the after-school enrichment program. She made sure all camp-goers were fed and had fun. They beat the heat with fun water activities, too! We're so glad to have Jocelyne and her Got Game team back again for the new school year.

UCLA's Young Black Scholar program facilitator, Shayla, supported our summer bridging program for African American students, funded by our Black Student Achievement Plan. Students learned about Black Excellence at every grade level while learning new skills in areas such as music, media, animation, arts & inventions, and self-empowerment!

Thank you for your leadership and support, Shayla! We hope to have you back next summer!

YOUNG BLACK SCHOLARS

Our very first (and hopefully not the last) Young Black Scholars Program was a success! With the funding and support from LAUSD's Black Student Achievement Plan, CMCS partnered with UCLA's Center X to provide this wonderful opportunity to our African American students. Our facilitator, Shayla (see above), supported teachers as they created amazing units including the kindergarten's theme of self love & empowerment. During the four-week program, incoming K-5 students were immersed in Black excellence and learned new skills music, media, animation, arts, and inventions. On Thursday, parents were invited to the classrooms to see the final projects from each unit and celebrated with a delicious potluck lunch. On Friday, Shayla hosted all families on the UCLA campus with a tour, lunch, and fun activities. Here you see only a few of the amazing projects from the summer program and the celebration at the end. Thank you to these amazing teachers who put so much love and work into making this a  most excellent experience for our students: Kirsten, Briana, Gabriella, Dylan, Wanda, and Fanahi. Thank you to the outstanding TAs for supporting the program: Amy, Jenifer, Anthony, Annabella, Akemi, and Okema. Thank you to Phyllis for supervising and even teaching during the program. Thank you to our wonderful families who transported their children to the program each day and for the delicious food at the potluck. And especially parents Lynda and Warren for seeing this project through from beginning to end.  We hope to bring the program back next summer, but even bigger and better!
