2026-2027 School Year
Dear Community Families,
It was so nice to meet so many new families at the playdates this summer and at Parent Orientation. Those opportunities and Kinder Camp will set our youngest students up for a confident start to a successful school year!
Back on campus, things have been in full swing! We hosted several wonderful summer programs, including Kids 4 College, Camp Invention, BSAP, and Kinder Camp, so even though school was technically “out,” Community was anything but quiet!
Behind the scenes, Albert and Jeremy have been working nonstop to get every classroom, restroom, and shared space sparkling clean and ready for our students. Our front office team has been just as busy finalizing rosters, answering lots (and lots!) of questions, and welcoming our newest families to Community.
And while all of that was happening, the front of our school got a little summer glow-up, too!
If you’ve ever noticed the colorful U.S. map at our school entrance, you can thank Community parent Delia H. (Freddie, Gr. 4). Delia originally created the map and, every year or so, generously returns to clean, refresh, and reseal it. She was back at it again this summer, and the map is looking bright and beautiful!
Our front walkway also received some much-needed love. You may remember that, by the end of last school year, parts of it were literally crumbling to pieces. This summer, the walkway’s original artist, Kim Abeles, returned to Community with her husband and daughter to repair and repaint the entire piece.
While she was here, Kim gave me a fascinating history lesson about her artwork, Thru the Earth. I had no idea there was so much meaning and history beneath our feet! It’s one of those special things about Community that many of us pass by—or walk right over—every day without knowing its story.
I can’t wait to share what I learned. Be sure to check out next week’s Community Corner for the story behind Thru the Earth and this beautiful piece of Community history!
Instructional materials are arriving, classrooms are being stocked, and our teachers have already begun preparing for the new school year. They’ll be returning to campus this week to finish preparing their rooms, fine-tune lesson plans, and set the tone for a successful year of learning.
A quick reminder: As part of our school policy, we do not accommodate parent requests for specific teacher or classroom assignments. Thank you for supporting a process that allows us to build balanced, thoughtful classroom communities.

This year, all of our after-school programs are returning, including Math Kangaroo, Tuesday Enrichment, and Tutoring / Intervention. And for our student performers—Tiny Spotlight is back with a production of The Wizard of Oz! Registration details will be shared in next week’s blog post.
The best way to stay informed is through our weekly blog, The Community Corner. Posts go live every Sunday at 6:00 PM, and you’ll receive both a text and email notification when they’re published.
I also invite you to join me for our monthly Tea Time with Toni sessions—held right after Morning Assembly. These gatherings are designed to keep you informed and engaged around key topics such as attendance, assessments, GATE, restorative practices, and more. Our first Tea Time will be Friday, August 21. If you have a topic or workshop suggestion, feel free to email me directly at trk2932@lausd.net.

Finally, please join us for our Meet & Greet on the first day of school at 8:10 AM in the Room 1 yard. It’s a great way to connect with staff and other families as we kick off the new year together.

Important Transportation Information
Transportation Enrollment: Both new and returning families should have already opted in for transportation, even if you plan to valet your student(s), in case of an emergency. If you did, you should be able to access your student's bus assignment in the Parent Portal under School Bus. If you have not received your bus assignment, please contact Kate at kate.harrington@lausd.net, and she will do her best to help. If you haven’t opted-in for transportation yet, please see below for instructions.
Bus Route/Stop Changes: You must wait at least two weeks before requesting changes to your assigned bus route or stop. Even if a change was approved last year, you must use this year's assigned route and stop until a new request can be accommodated. However, if you are a dual-household family, please contact Kate, and she will do her best to accommodate dual routes before the two-week waiting period. Beginning August 26, you may email your bus route or stop change requests, and she will submit them to Transportation.
Transportation Plan Google Form: Please complete your Transportation Plan Google Form (Link Here) ASAP. We need to know how your child will be getting home on the first day of school—and every day thereafter—so we can notify teachers and tags on backpacks. If we do not receive your form, our default plan will be to send your student home on their assigned bus.
First Day of School: If riding the bus is your transportation plan, we encourage families to have students ride the bus beginning on the first day of school. Parents are welcome to follow the bus to school that morning, park in the upper yard, and watch their student get off the bus.
Bus Passes: You should receive a temporary bus pass for your student(s) in the mail from Transportation before the start of school. Students will need to scan their pass when boarding and exiting the bus, so please place it in your student's backpack where it will be easily accessible. We have been informed that permanent bus passes will be mailed in September. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
Each year, six parent members are elected to represent our six grade levels (K–5). Two parents may share a position if that works best. If you’re elected, your voice will help ensure that the parents in your grade level are informed, heard, and represented.
Grade-level representatives are expected to:
Attend all Community Council meetings (held once a month from 1:45–3:00 p.m.)
Share important updates with families in your grade level in a timely manner
Participate in Town Hall meetings to connect with parents, discuss concerns, and share information
The term for a Grade Level Representative is one year. Parents may nominate themselves to represent only one grade level, and you must not be a regular employee of Community Magnet Charter School or a current board member of CFF (the CFF president appoints their own representative to Council).
If you’d like to nominate yourself:
Return the Council Nomination Form to Toni by Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
Email Toni (trk2932@lausd.net) a 75-word statement introducing yourself and your interest in serving, so families in your grade can get to know you.
Parent elections will take place on Thursday, September 3, 2026 during the grade-level first session of Back to School Night.

We no longer accept phone calls for Bus Book changes.
If your student’s after-school plans change, please complete this Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m.
