An (Un) Eventful Week

Good Evening Community Families, School will be closed again on Monday. Check your email and the LAUSD website for updates. What an (un) eventful week!  The big event of the week, Parade of Masks , was postponed due to the other big event of the week, wildfires across the area. On Thursday, after most of the students and staff had gone home for the day, Josh came to tell me that he saw lots of smoke coming from behind the hills to the north. Within minutes, the smell of smoke was thick and wisps of ash were floating in the air.  Coach Mike and Josh sheltered-in-place with their students until about 6pm when the last of the parents arrived to pick up their children.         PLEASE GIVE A BIG THANK YOU TO COACHES MIKE AND JOSH FOR KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE DURING THE SHELTER-IN-PLACE ON FRIDAY!!!! Great ShakeOut Drill Earlier Thursday, all staff and students practiced the annual Great ShakeOut. We simulated an earthquake with shaking sounds over the PA system. All students and staf

SAFETY First and ATTENDANCE Matters!

Happy Sunday Evening Community Families, Seems this week and last are all about safety. On Monday, our Crisis Team received training on how to handle students in crisis. At Friday's Tea Time with Toni, I presented our school's Safe School Plan for 2019-2020 and Kathryn discussed district requirements for Parent Volunteers. This Tea Time presentation will soon be available on the Fresh Schools website in the Papers & Docs section. (I will be updating this blog on Monday to include the audio link.) This coming Monday, a representative from the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) will visit our campus for a safety walk-through. Staff and students will practice earthquake safety during the Great ShakeOut Drill on Thursday.  Please make sure that all information on your child's emergency card is current. Please remember to be safe and respectful role models for our kids in the valet line and everywhere on campus. At CMCS, we strive to always be SAFE, RES

Information Exchange

Good Evening, Community Families, Thank you for your patience and cooperation on Friday morning as we monitored the fires and the air quality on campus.  If your family is directly affected by the fires, please let us know how our school community can support you. We're here to offer whatever support we can. If you were not directly affected, I hope you were able to enjoy the weekend, even though it was a bit smoky in many areas. LAUSD has been keeping tabs on the safety of school campuses over the weekend. CMCS looks pretty clear to open as usual on Monday morning with no interruptions to bus services. If that changes, I will notify you by email immediately. Recap of last week : Monday was Middle School Night with 8 middle schools attending. This was a great opportunity for parents as they begin making important decisions about the next phase in their child's educational career. Hispanic Heritage Month wrapped up with a wonderful celebration of Cuban Music and food tas

So Much to Tell You!

Good Evening Community Families! There's a lot of news to share this week, so this blog may be a bit long! This past 4-day week was pretty quiet. Kindergarten and Invitational Conferences were held and mandatory parent conferences for all grades are coming up in November. School Board Member, Nick Melvoin, visited on Friday, October 4th. He spoke with Kathryn and me on a variety of topics including: hiring requirements for teachers' assistants, admitting siblings to magnet schools, CMCS safety plan (he's going to help us), CMCS iPad grant (it'll be a few months before we find out if it's approved), CMCS safety concerns (he's working on a streamlined process to report school safety concerns), and future visits (he'd like to visit again soon). 5th grade families : The Magnet window opened on Tuesday, October 1 and will close on Friday, November 15.
