APPRECIATING FINE ART on CAMPUS
RETNA Mural |
Every piece tells a story and I was particularly interested in learning the story behind the mural pictured above. This mural, located on the exterior walls of the library, features script resembling Egyptian hieroglyphics. Painted on a pink background, the script is drawn with vibrant colors ranging from soft pastel blues and pinks to darker hues of blue and green.
After doing a little digging (I asked Kathryn), I learned that this mural was actually painted by a well-known LA-based artist named RETNA. RETNA is an American street artist known best for calligraphy and graffiti art. The script in RETNA's art communicates personal or secret messages and poetry. His work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and projects around the world, including Los Angeles, Miami, London, New York, Hong Kong, and Mexico City.
RETNA, the friend of a former CMCS family, painted the beautiful mural in honor of the Culminating Class of 2013. The message in this particular piece is based on Dr. Seuss's book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!". Learning about this interesting work of art has given me a new appreciation for the beauty we find right on our own campus. I haven't been able to identify the title of the mural, so if anyone out there knows, please tell us!

School Picture Day – Thursday, September 9th!
Picture Day is here! Besides providing you with the option of purchasing photos of your student, school pictures are used to populate the LAUSD student information system, generate student IDs, and are the basis for generating the yearbook student pages.
The company we use, Ultimate Exposures, has a touch free system so no order forms, camera cards, or any exchange of money will take place on Picture Day. Proofs will be emailed to you, and you can purchase online at your convenience with orders being mailed directly to your home. In addition, Ultimate Exposures has strict protocols (vaccinated staff, masking, social distancing, hand sanitizing), for taking school pictures during the pandemic. We will be shooting all photos outside; and as was the case last year, the class photo will be virtual (the kids will be shot separately and photo shopped together).
There is no need to wear anything special (except a smile J) – some like to dress up a little, while for others it is just a regular day at school. Whatever you choose, make sure your child has appropriate closed-toe shoes for the day. Thank you!
