It's Think Positive Week!

Happy Sunday, Community Families,

Last week was so unusual, with ransomware attacks, extreme heat and humidity, failing classroom air conditioners, etc. With all of that behind us, I am 😁 looking forward to celebrating Think Positive Day on Tuesday, September 13!! Heck, let's just make it Think Positive Week! 

We have a lot of reasons to feel positive about the upcoming week: 

  • temperatures will be perfect this week, ranging from 79-82 wonderful degrees!
  • all staff and student passwords have been reset (thank you, Xantipa!)
  • our new cafeteria manager, Madliene, will begin her first full week at Community! Stay tuned for a more formal introduction!
  • we have so many parent volunteers ready to jump in and help out on campus - thank you to all of our volunteers who have been helping out in the classrooms, library, and valet! We appreciate you!
Now, Community, it's your turn to share your positive vibes, thoughts, and actions this week! Send a Community member (parent, staff member, student, enrichment teacher) a positive note this week. I can't wait to feel the positivity!

UPDATE: RANSOMWARE ATTACK ON LAUSD

Though we are experiencing minor setbacks here and there, all staff and student passwords have been reset and are working. LAUSD's IT department will provide information on student devices ordered through device.lausd.net.

Six-Week Invitational Conferences
September 19-23

Six weeks already?? Yes, our six-week invitational conferences are coming soon! These conferences are by invitation for Grades 1-5, mandatory for kindergarten, and are in addition to the district's regularly scheduled parent conferences in November and March. This is an opportunity for teachers and parents to communicate early concerns regarding student academics, behavior, or social-emotional well-being. It also allows us to begin early interventions for students struggling with either of these issues. Your teacher may want to discuss your child's participation in after-school tutoring, counseling through West Valley Counseling Center, or strategies to improve behavior. 

5th graders are looking forward to a fun, action packed 3 days and 2 nights in Idyllwild. AstroCamp is a 5th grade perk where students  learn about science, build life-long memories, and strengthen bonds with their peers. After a two year hiatus, we are excited to sponsor this opportunity for our students. Click here to learn more about this program. 


TeaTime with Toni

Join us on Thursday, September 22 for a virtual TeaTime with Toni. We will present/discuss our School-Wide Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (SWPBIS) plan and how we use restorative justice practices and RULER to support student social-emotional well-being.

AFTER-SCHOOL CARE

We are still hoping to find two wonderful people to run our after-school program through Beyond the Bell. If you know anyone who may be interested, please have them call our office or email me at trk2932@lausd.net. We count on our parents for a lot, and we're here again asking for your support in this. I have exhausted all of my options.   AND, we also still need TAs!

To support students and families, LAUSD is providing on demand homework help with a personal virtual tutor. This support is available to all elementary and span K-8 LAUSD students at no cost to families in multiple languages. We have contracted with Paper to ensure 24/7 instant support for all students and families.   ENRICHMENT BLOCKS BEGIN THIS WEEK! Dear Community Families, WHEW!! What a week! It was an exciting one and we're so happy to have students back on campus. We now have a week under our belts- students know where their classrooms are, who their teachers are, and their bus assignments. Teachers have taught classroom systems and procedures, and we've taught our expectations for behavior during behavior assemblies.  On Thursday, we practiced our first fire and earthquake drills of the year. We learned how to evacuate quickly and quietly to the upper yard and how to drop, cover, and hold in the classroom. We held our first Morning Assembly on Friday. Each week, teachers select one student to be recognized as the Student-of-the-Week at the Morning Assembly. These students receive certificates to acknowledge their achievement and are invited to select a prize from the Treasure Box. Staff members issue Kindness Counts coupons are given to students who show kindness and good citizenshi

It's the First Day of School!

  Dear Community Families, The first day of school is here! There will be a lot happening at school this week to kick off the new year.  All parents are welcome to join us for a Meet & Greet after walking your student to their classroom on the first day of school. CFF will provide light refreshments as you meet and mingle with other parents and CMCS staff. Meet us on the Room 1 yard at 8:10am. Our Beginning-of-Year Assessment windows open this week so your child will be taking diagnostic tests in reading (DIBELS for Gr. K-2 / iReady for Gr. 3-5) and math (iReady for all grade levels). Teachers will use these results to determine classroom small group instruction, after-school intervention groups, advanced math groups, and tutoring groups. As of last school year, LAUSD requires students to complete 30-45 minutes of iReady Personalized Learning per week. Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year

  Dear Community Families, Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Community Magnet Charter School! This summer flew by quickly, but I hope you enjoyed time with your families and friends. I am very happy to have spent a week visiting Toronto with my family. It just so happened that we were there for Canada Day (similar to our Fourth of July) and the Toronto Jazz Festival! In addition to spectacular fireworks, top-notch dining, and wonderful jazz music, we witnessed the awesomeness of the beautiful Niagara Falls. It was a fun-packed week and I left with a special place in my heart for Toronto! Speaking of fun-packed, Community was buzzing with fun for most of the summer. We hosted the Kids 4 College Summer Camp, Camp Invention, BSAP Summer Bridging Program and Kinder Camp! This week will be even busier, but without the kids and not so fun.
