Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Community Families, Teachers, and Staff,

I hope you've enjoyed the winter break. Why does it seem to go by so fast??  I'm happy to say that my break was fun and relaxing!! My daughter, Symone, and her kitty, Stewart, visited from Seattle for TWO WEEKS! We baked cookies at our annual pre-Christmas cookie bake, binged on Netflix movies (White Lotus and The Glass Onion are must-sees) and I was even inspired to bake a persimmon cheesecake after watching Season 13 of The Great British Bake-Off. It was delicious! On New Years Day, Symone and I had Swedish massages at Burke Williams. I think we'll have to make that an annual holiday tradition!

Now that we're thoroughly rejuvenated, the second semester of school begins! The first half of our school year has gone off without a hitch, so I'm confident that the second half will be just as wonderful. Looking at our school calendar, January seems to be a pretty light month with not many school-wide activities planned. See below for information on our first Dine & Donate fundraiser of 2023!

Classrooms will be quite busy. The focus will be on easing back into a regular school routine of high-quality teaching and exciting learning experiences. Field trips to MOCA, the Eco-Station, and VT Ranch are scheduled for this month. Check in with your child's teacher for any scheduled classroom activities.

Please note that this month, we will be working on our huge pile of parent volunteer applications. Any incomplete applications that have been opened for over 2 months will be closed. Please make sure that you have submitted all documents if you plan to volunteer on campus.

Attendance continues to be a high priority. Please provide a note for every absence. Absences are excused if due to student injury or illness, a medical/dental appointment, or funeral. Some excused absences must be pre-approved by the principal. Click here to read up on LAUSD's attendance policy.

Rain is expected throughout the first two days of school and temperatures will range from 59 - 68 degrees this week.  Make sure your child is dressed appropriately and please take extra precautions while driving through the valet line. As students arrive before the bell, the auditorium will be open and the library is available to a limited number of students as well. Additional rooms will be opened as needed.

Finally, COVID is still very active. Each student and staff member was provided with a COVID-19 rapid antigen test prior to the winter break. Please administer the test to your child before returning to school tomorrow. If the test is positive, please upload the results to dailypass.lausd.net, quarantine your child at home for 5 days, then take another test. If the test is negative, we look forward to seeing your child in school tomorrow!

See you soon!

~ Toni

LAUSD/SCHOOL POLICY ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL

CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND OTHER MOBILE DEVICES It is the policy of LA Unified to prohibit the use of cellular phones or any electronic mobile device by students on campus during normal school hours. Students are permitted to possess cellular phones, or other electronic mobile devices such as cameras, electronic games, radios, MP3 players, computing devices, tablets, etc. on campus, provided that any such device shall remain turned off and stored in a locker, backpack, purse, pocket, or other places where it is not visible during normal school hours. Students are permitted to use cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices on campus, before and after school or during school activities that occur outside of school hours. For LA Unified, state, and national assessments, students are prohibited to access any unauthorized electronic devices at any time during the entire testing session. Students must comply any time a request is made by school personnel to cease the use of a cellular phone and/or other electronic mobile device even before or after school. Schools may adopt more stringent cellular phone policies through the School Site Council. Cellular phone use on the school bus is for emergency purposes only; driver authorization is required. For more information, you may call Transportation Services at (800) 522-8737. LA Unified is not responsible for lost or stolen cellular phones or other electronic mobile devices.

If a student is found using and/or displaying a cell phone, it will be taken away to be returned to a parent upon request.

You may find this information in the Parent-Student Handbook  (page 6) which is posted on our school website under the Resources tab. A hard copy of the handbook should have been sent home by the teacher. If not, please let me know. Also, please let me know if you have any questions regarding this LAUSD policy at trk2932@laud.net.
