IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Dear Community Families,

Over the weekend, I was notified that Got Game Camp, our after-school program, would be taking a temporary pause in operation effective immediately. Coach K has contacted all affected families and he and his team are working around the clock to get the program back up and running as soon as possible. We wish them the best of luck in this endeavor and hope for their quick return. Got Game has been a very supportive partner to Community Magnet over the years and has proven time and time again to be a stable and reliable program.

However, I understand that many of our families depend on consistent after-school care and are in immediate need of another option. I have been working throughout the weekend to ensure that there would be no interruption in after-school care at Community for those families. I appreciate the immediate response and support from LAUSD Operations and Beyond the Bell in helping to find an after-school program for Community as we wait for Got Game's return. We also had a few CMCS teachers and staff lined up, ready to jump in and provide after-school care!

Beginning tomorrow, A World Fit for Kids will be on campus to provide after-school care. Students will report to Room 1 after school as usual to meet the WFfK staff. Your child must already be registered (with Got Game) to attend. Please call the school at 310-476-2281 if you are unsure of your child's registration or if you need to make any change to your child's regular after-school plan.

The Executive Director of A World Fit for Kids, Normandie Nigh, will be available via ZOOM to meet parents and to answer questions at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. I will send the ZOOM link via email tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience as we worked through this.

Sincerely,
Toni

PARENT EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

SESSION 1: PARENTS- EMPOWERED TO LEAD IMPROVEMENT

Session 1 Meeting Summary:

Thank you to all who were able to attend our gathering as well as those whose time did not meet with their intentions to be present. During our time together, we spoke about hopes for our children's school year, issues we are facing as a school community, and one area we can tackle for improvement in 2023-24. Although there are many things that could have been selected, the gathered group determined that focusing on Conflict Resolution would have the greatest impact on the largest number of students this year. The following concepts were generated as subsets of conflict resolution that need to be addressed:
  • Adult supervision
  • Body boundaries
  • Bullying
  • Helping children navigate other students who are accustomed to different parenting styles & conflict strategies
  • Better communicating the school-wide plan for conflict scenarios and teaching those to students
  • What is the follow-up when students repeatedly engage in unwanted behaviors?
  • Develop peer mediation/mentoring/accountability
  • How is SEL/Restorative Justice being taught?
  • Status / privilege
  • Self-advocacy
  • Anti-racist education
Potential solutions to address these concerns are:
  • Bringing in an expert to support parents, staff, and students
  • Hiring a full time Specialist/Coach for all classrooms
  • Designating a space on campus for calming
  • Developing "Parent Buddies" and cross-age "Kid Buddies" to support transition into the school and across grades
  • Assigning Bus Captains
Parent partners within the space volunteered to collect information on these solutions to determine how each could work, their cost, and timelines to implement. As you know, we are stronger together so if you can be of service toward realizing any of these proposals, please contact Toni at trk2932@lausd.net.
We will reconvene on Thursday, Sept. 28 from 8-9:30am, Room 23, to develop an action plan.
All parents are welcome to attend. We hope you can join us!

TEATIME with TONI

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend Teatime with Toni this past Thursday, September 7th. The presentation was the first of a
series of district-mandated Every School Safe modules: Child Sexual Grooming and Awareness Module for Parents and Caregivers. If you suspect child abuse or inappropriate behavior regarding a child, this is what you should do . . .

    IMPORTANT FOR ALL FAMILIES!!!

All parents, new and returning, must complete a Household Income Form (HIF) to maximize our school's funding for the next 4 years. In order to qualify for the 4 years of funding, we must have all applications for new and returning students completed by October 30, 2023. VALET RULES

For the SAFETY of your child and ALL children and parents at CMCS, if you are driving your child to school you MUST follow these valet rules.
    • Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
    • Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
    • Drive along the left curb.  The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
    • Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
    • When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb.  There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
    • Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car.  Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
    • When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle.  IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
    • Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
    • Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb.  The line is single file from the east gate entrance  through to the west gate exit.  Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
    • FINALLY, be patient and kind.  The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children.  Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.

    IMMUNIZATION COMPLIANCE

All students enrolled in California schools must present immunization records or medical exemption documentation upon admission to school unless there are special circumstances. In order to assist parents in providing immunization records, LAUSD has launched Vive's Immunization Assistant Tool. Parents must have a Parent Portal account to access this helpful tool. (Click here to watch a quick video on how to create a Parent Portal account.)  The state of California no longer allows religious or personal belief exemptions (Health and Safety Code section 120325). Only medical exemptions are allowed.
