What a Willie Wonka Weekend!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH WILLIE WONKA CASTS!
WHAT A WONDERFUL SHOW!

Dear Community Families,

I really hope you had a chance to attend the musical theater performances this weekend. Both Willie Wonka casts put on amazing shows and I was mesmerized by the pure talent in our students! It was a joy to watch the lively singing, dancing, and acting. Lindsay and her crew from Tiny Spotlight worked tirelessly to get the show rolling and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for making this such a great experience for our students. Also, a HUGE thank you to Giulia Prenna and parent volunteers for their very hard work as well. But most of all, thank you to all the students who had a hand in making this weekend such a joyful one. Please stay tuned for news about next semester's musical theater registration!!

Another big event from this past week was our Town Hall meeting on Friday. Merce Flores, Complex Project Manager for Region West, provided updates and information on the projects coming to Community. Here are a couple of highlights:

  • Work on repaving across the entire campus is now in the works. During Thanksgiving week, priority areas on campus (upper yard tree well, visitors parking lot, and area near Rms. 13-14, drainage areas near Rms. 21-24) will be repaired. While the plan is to repave the entire campus, it will take time. Priority areas will be repaired first.
  • The roofing project will begin very soon. Every building on campus will receive a new roof and this project will take about seven months to complete. Stay tuned for specific start dates.
Our "new" cell phone policy was also discussed at the Town Hall meeting. As you know, LAUSD will be implementing the Phone-Free School Day policy in February, 2025. Community Council has made a few changes to our school's existing cell phone policy. Beginning in January, 2025, we will enforce our policy of confiscating any cell phones, smart watches, or other similar devices on campus. While students are allowed to bring these items to school, they are to remain out of sight while on campus and on the school bus. That means they should be kept in the student's backpack while on campus and/or on the school bus. If a student is seen on campus with a smart watch, cell phone, or similar device, it will be confiscated and held in the main office until a parent picks it up. Any reports of these devices on the school bus will be investigated. If the reports are found to be true, the student will be issued a citation. After 3 citations, the student will be suspended from the bus for 3 days. All parents and students will be asked to sign a Phone-Free School Day policy agreement when we return from winter break.

By the way, I have received multiple reports that 5th grade students are posting inappropriate content and/or messages in chat groups from home. Students are being added to these chat groups without their knowledge or consent. Parents, please be sure to monitor your child's social media and cell phone use at all times.

Well, I can't believe we have one week before Thanksgiving break and then just two more weeks until Winter Break! Please keep in mind that the very important Middle-of-Year assessments for Math and Reading will begin the day we return from winter break, so please make sure your child returns to school on January 6th!

Best,
Toni

FAMILY ACADEMY:

JOY AND WELLNESS IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON

VALET RULES

For the SAFETY of your child and ALL children and parents at CMCS, if you are driving your child to school you MUST follow these valet rules.
    • Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
    • Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
    • Drive along the left curb.  The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
    • Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
    • When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb.  There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
    • Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car.  Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
    • When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle.  IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
    • Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
    • Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb.  The line is single file from the east gate entrance  through to the west gate exit.  Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
    • FINALLY, be patient and kind.  The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children.  Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.
