Observing Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2026

Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day is observed on April 24th each year. It's a day when people remember and honor the Armenian people who suffered and died during a very sad time in history that began in 1915.

Over 100 years ago, many Armenian families were forced to leave their homes, and more than a million people lost their lives. This happened in what is now the country of Turkey.

On this day, Armenian communities around the world come together to:

  • Remember those who were lost
  • Share stories about their ancestors and keep their memory alive
  • Celebrate Armenian culture, traditions, and resilience
  • Learn from history so we can work toward a kinder, more peaceful world

Many people light candles, attend memorial services, or visit monuments to show respect and remember. It's a solemn day, but it's also about hope—hope that by remembering the past, we can build a future where all people are treated with dignity and respect.

Dear Community Magnet Charter School Families,

Thank you to our incredible parent community for the outpouring of support this week. The breakfast treats on Tuesday morning were such a thoughtful gesture, and our staff felt truly  appreciated and cared for. We are all so grateful that the strike was averted, and your generosity and encouragement meant more than words can express. We love our Community families!

I hope you had the chance to catch at least one performance of Frozen Jr. this weekend—both casts were absolutely incredible! The level of talent in our “little” Community continues to amaze me. A heartfelt thank you to Lindsay, the Tiny Spotlight team, and Karyn on piano for creating such a special opportunity to showcase our students’ gifts. I was able to take a few photos and capture two beautiful “Let It Go” solos by Maya K. (Tuesday cast) and Rose O. (Thursday cast), both of whom brought Elsa to life in such a memorable way. View the photos and solo performances: Tuesday Cast / Thursday Cast.

We’ve also been making steady progress on campus improvements. Our roofing project—while taking longer than expected—is finally nearing completion, with just a few final inspections remaining. Next up is a smaller paving project scheduled over two weekends (April 24–26 and May 9–10), during which the driveway and visitor parking lot will be repaved. We’re also working closely with our Complex Project Manager on additional upgrades. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m excited to share more news soon—stay tuned!

It’s hard to believe how quickly this school year is flying by. This week marks the conclusion of our after-school programs. Student Nest tutoring (held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) will end on Thursday, April 23, which will also be the final day for late bus service. We look forward to bringing them all back next year - Math Kangaroo, Tuesday Enrichment, after-school intervention, and Student Nest tutoring.

Our 5th-grade students begin CAASPP testing this week, starting with the California Science Test. Please see the information below for details, and feel free to review the CAASPP presentation if you were unable to attend.

Our Community Council meeting will take place this Tuesday. As always, all stakeholders are warmly invited to attend. If you’d like to make a public comment, please reach out to your grade-level representative.

We’re also excited to welcome back Big Red Gorilla and kick off our Pump It Up! fundraiser this week. This program promotes healthy habits and physical fitness while raising important funds for our school. I hope you caught the energetic kickoff at Friday’s assembly—who knew parent Ron Truppa,  had such impressive dance moves? We’re all looking forward to Thursday’s challenge!

This time of year also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the incredible staff members who make Community such a special place. This week, we recognize National Library Day. Our library truly is the heart of our school.

Students call it “the best part of CMCS,” and parents describe it as a place where children feel calm, connected, and supported. We are so grateful to Sarah Lilly for creating such an inclusive and nurturing environment—please take a moment to show your appreciation for our treasure.

We also celebrate Administrative Professionals Day this week, and we are so fortunate to have an outstanding office team. Lalita leads with calm expertise and steady support. Stephanie, new to the team, brings joy, energy, and a wealth of LAUSD experience to the front office. Kate, our Community Representative, plays a vital role in connecting families and school, while Kathi, our Magnet Coordinator, English Learner Coordinator, and GATE Coordinator, approaches every challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. Kayla provides essential support to our Korean families, and we are deeply grateful for her work. We are thrilled to have Nurse Mary on campus full-time—she has already made an incredible impact. Xantipa continues to be a cornerstone of our school community, supporting countless aspects of campus life each day. And we are happy to welcome Kathryn back to lead our arts programming, including Tuesday Enrichment and our Cultural Arts Program.

Please join me in celebrating and thanking this exceptional team—they truly make it all happen for our students.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead,

Toni

Student Device Check Next Week

Community Magnet will receive a technology upgrade next week! The district's tech team will visit our campus to inspect all student devices and replace any that are outdated or need updating.

Please ensure your student brings their school-issued device   to school every day next week (April 21-25).

While the primary check dates are Wednesday, April 23

and Thursday, April 24, the tech team has requested

that all devices be on campus throughout the entire week

to ensure no student is missed.

If your child does not bring their school-issued device home, there is no need for action—their device will be checked at school.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students equipped with up-to-date technology!

LET'S PUMP IT UP!!

Understanding the CAST Science Assessment

This week, our 5th grade students will participate in the California Science Test (CAST), a state-required assessment that measures student understanding of science concepts aligned with the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS).

The CAST is a computer-based test designed to evaluate students' ability to apply scientific knowledge, analyze data, and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Unlike traditional multiple-choice tests, the CAST includes interactive tasks that ask students to investigate phenomena, design solutions, and explain their reasoning—just as real scientists do.

Students in grades 5, 8, and once in high school (typically grade 10 or 11) are required to take this assessment.

The test assesses three dimensions of science learning:

  • Science and Engineering Practices (asking questions, analyzing data, constructing explanations)
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas (life science, physical science, earth and space science)
  • Crosscutting Concepts (patterns, cause and effect, systems and models)

Parents may support their student by encouraging curiosity about the natural world, discussing science topics at home, and reminding your child that this assessment helps us understand how well we're teaching science concepts. Results will be shared later this year.

CAASPP SCHEDULE - Grades 3-5 only

April 6-17: CAASSP Practice (Gr. 3-4 may continue practice testing through April 22)

April 20-22: CAST (Science Assessment for  Gr. 5 only)

April 27-May 1: CAASPP ELA (Gr. 3-5)

May 4-8: CAASPP Math (Gr. 3-5)

NEW SCHOOL EXPERIENCE SURVEY

The District is creating a new School Experience Survey! We have created a ThoughtExchange to gather community feedback and recommendations for the new School Experience Survey (“SES 2.0”) and would like everyone in the LAUSD school community to participate.

We’re interested in learning what matters most to the community so we can build a better School Experience Survey for school year 2026-2027 and beyond. Everyone’s feedback will help shape the new "SES 2.0" to make it the best it can be!

There is still time to enroll for our instructional Summer School programs that will be offered to our students from June 22-July 20 including TK-7th grade programs, Dual Enrollment, Enrichment Camps, ESY and  senior high credit recovery and enrichment. For information about summer programs, please visit the website at lausd.org/summeroflearning. Or pick up a paper application at your school.

Warner Elementary School will be hosting Summer School for Community Magnet students, however families can enroll their child(ren) at any site across LAUSD.

VERY IMPORTANT AFTER-SCHOOL DISMISSAL UPDATE

Hello Community Families,

We’re excited to have all of our after-school activities resuming this week! To help ensure a smooth and timely departure of buses each afternoon, we need your support.

After several reminders to call before noon, we continue to receive last-minute changes—sometimes right up until and even after dismissal. With the goal of keeping every student safe and ensuring they get to the right place after school, we’re making a small but important change to our process.

Beginning Monday, February 9, 2026, we will no longer accept phone calls for Bus Book changes.
If your student’s after-school plans change, please complete this Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m.

Our goal is to get students safely and efficiently to their buses, valet, or after-school activities—and your help truly makes a difference.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Remind your student in the morning if they are staying after school for an activity. Students sometimes forget, and when that happens, they may get on the bus or go to valet instead of heading to their activity. This can delay bus departure as staff work to locate and redirect them.
  • Submit the Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m. if there are any changes to your student’s usual after-school plans. Telling your student alone isn’t enough—we must confirm changes directly with you. When changes come in late, it can cause confusion and delay buses waiting to depart.

By following these steps, you’re helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and on time—so students get home sooner and buses can return for late pickup more quickly.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our students safe and our afternoons running smoothly!

Best,

Toni

    SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY!

Students need to come to school every day. When possible, please schedule your child’s medical appointments outside of school hours. (See the bell schedule for our school hours.) If you must schedule an appointment during school hours, please check in at the main office to pick up/drop off your child.

The following types of absences are excused: illness, doctor’s appointments, funerals, family emergencies, court dates, religious observances, etc. Examples of unexcused absences include: vacations, “we slept in,” “we took a family day,” “we went to Disneyland for her birthday,” "we visited relatives out of state/country," etc. Even if you send in a note to explain the absence, those examples would be designated as unexcused. For more information, please refer to LAUSD’s Attendance Guide.

You may know that LAUSD has an Independent Study program. This program is intended to provide make-up classwork for students who must miss school for legitimate long-term absences (for example, needing to go out of town for a death in the family, quarantine/lengthy stay at home for serious illness, or needing to make a visa appointment in a home country). Independent Study is NOT for “we are taking 2 weeks off and going abroad,” or “we are starting our Winter Break 10 days early.” For Independent Study in excess of 15 days, you must enroll in the online City of Angels program.

    VALET RULES
For the SAFETY of your child and ALL children and parents at CMCS, if you are driving your child to school you MUST follow these valet rules.
      • Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
      • Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
      • Drive along the left curb.  The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
      • Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
      • When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb.  There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
      • Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car.  Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
      • When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle.  IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
      • Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
      • Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb.  The line is single file from the east gate entrance  through to the west gate exit.  Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
      • FINALLY, be patient and kind.  The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children.  Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.
