This week is projected to be very hot! With temperatures hovering near or above 90 degrees throughout the week, we may be following our inclement weather schedule for much of the week to keep students safe and comfortable.

During hot-weather inclement days:

  • Students will eat their recess snacks and lunch outdoors at the lunch tables. Albert will set up our hot-weather mister to help keep the lunch area cool while students eat.
  • After recess snacks, students will return to their air-conditioned classrooms for indoor recess activities.
  • After lunch, students will be treated to a movie in our air-conditioned auditorium rather than spending the lunch period on the yard.
  • PE and other strenuous outdoor activities will move indoors when temperatures make outdoor activity unsafe.
  • Students may store their lunches in the auditorium in the morning to help keep food cool until lunchtime.

Families can help us beat the heat! Please send your child to school with a full, labeled water bottle each day and remind them to drink water regularly—even if they don't feel thirsty. Students may refill their bottles at our filtered water stations in the nurse's office and cafeteria.

Students should also wear lightweight, loose-fitting, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes. Hats may be worn outdoors for additional sun protection, and we encourage families to apply sunscreen before school.

Please avoid sending foods that can spoil easily in the heat unless they are packed with an ice pack or in an insulated lunch bag. Frozen water bottles can also help keep lunches cool and provide an extra cold drink as they thaw.

Teachers and staff will encourage frequent water breaks and will be watching students closely for signs that they are becoming overheated. Students will be reminded to tell an adult immediately if they feel dizzy, weak, nauseated, unusually tired, develop a headache, or simply don't feel well.

Our goal is to make sure everyone stays safe, hydrated, and as cool as possible during this very warm week. Thank you for helping us keep our students healthy and comfortable!







Dear Community Families,

We officially have our first week of school under our belts, and we are off to a wonderful start! Students now know their classrooms, teachers, and bus assignments, and teachers have spent time establishing classroom routines and procedures. We also reviewed our school-wide **5 Be’s—Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Trustworthy—**during our behavior assemblies.

On Thursday, we practiced our first fire drill of the year. Students learned and practiced how to evacuate their classrooms quickly and quietly and report to their designated locations on the upper yard. They did a great job with our first safety drill!

Friday marked our first Morning Assembly of the year! Each week, teachers select a Student of the Week to recognize for achievement and positive contributions to our school community. Honorees receive a certificate and a prize from the Treasure Box. Staff members also distribute Kindness Counts coupons to students who demonstrate kindness and good citizenship. Coupons are entered into a weekly drawing for additional recognition at Morning Assembly.

Friday assemblies are also a chance to show our school spirit! Students are encouraged to wear CMCS Spirit Gear, and the class with the most participation earns Community Cash, which can be saved and used toward a classroom party or special prize.

This week, Beginning-of-Year (BOY) assessments in reading and math will continue across all grade levels. These assessments provide teachers with valuable information about students’ current strengths and areas for growth and help us plan instruction and additional supports. Newly enrolled English Learners will also take the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California).

We are also excited to launch our Enrichment Blocks this week! Every student participates in PE each week and rotates through Vocal Music, Dance, Drama, and Visual Art. Our enrichment opportunities for this semester include:

  • Library – Sarah Lilly | Monday–Friday
  • PE – Coach Dareh (Got Game) | Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays
  • Visual Art – Hilary| Mondays
  • Vocal Music – Yoon | Wednesdays
  • Drama – Meaghan | Thursdays (first semester) / Melissa (second semester)
  • Dance – Rosalba | Fridays (first semester) / Myko (second semester)
  • Chess – Jessica | Beginning the week of August 26 during lunch (optional)

With routines settling into place and enrichment beginning, we are ready for another exciting week of learning, creativity, and community. Thank you for helping us get the school year off to such a positive start!

How to Become a Volunteer

We rely on our families' support to make Community such a special place. We encourage you to become an approved LAUSD volunteer so you can:

  • Chaperone field trips
  • Assist teachers in the classroom
  • Help with classroom parties
  • Volunteer for valet so we can continue offering this convenient service to our families
  • Assist Sarah Lilly in the library
  • Help with school and CFF events, including Parade of Masks, Spring Dance, Pump It Up, International Children's Day, and more!

Tier II vs. Tier III Volunteers
You only need to apply as a Tier III Volunteer if you plan to work one-on-one with students and/or chaperone a 5th-grade overnight field trip. Otherwise, please apply as a Tier II Volunteer.
After submitting your online Tier II application, please email your TB clearance paperwork to Kate Harrington (kate.harrington@lausd.net) if:
  • You are applying to volunteer for the first time, or
  • Your current TB clearance has expired.
Please note that TB clearance is valid for four years.

Screenings are available for volunteers who are not considered at risk for TB. Please complete the TB Risk Assessment using the link below. If your assessment indicates that you are not at risk, you may attend one of the free regional screenings, where a medical professional will complete and sign your TB Certificate of Completion. You may also have your personal physician complete and sign the form instead.
If your assessment indicates that you are at risk for TB, you will need to obtain a TB test from your healthcare provider.

FREE HIGH-DOSE TUTORING IS AVAILABLE 
TO ALL ELIGIBLE STUDENTS!




Who is eligible?
  • i-Ready Reading or Math: One grade level below or more
  • Report Card Marks: ELA or Math composite of 1 or 2
  • Teacher recommendation
  • SBAC: Standard Nearly Met or Standard Not Met

This year, our after-school high-dose tutoring and intervention will both run for  ten weeks, beginning September 9th, 2:50-3:35, and will be teacher-led. Tutoring will be taught for 45 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Intervention will be taught for one hour and 40 minutes on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students may be picked up in valet after tutoring sessions, or students may take the late bus which leaves at approximately 5:00pm. Remember, we only have the following late bus stops: Chandler, Wilshire Crest, and Windsor Hills. Students taking the late bus will go to Kids 4 College camp after tutoring until buses arrive for boarding.

ANTS IN OUR PANTS!

This early in the school year, ants have not yet become a nuisance. However, we know they will quickly find their way into classrooms when food is left unwrapped or unsealed in backpacks, desks, or other areas.

Please remind your students to keep all food sealed in Ziploc bags, baggies, or storage containers. Students should also take their lunch bags and lunch boxes home every night. Food left behind overnight is an open invitation for ants!

Each teacher has been provided with a safe soap-and-water solution
recommended by LAUSD Pest Control. We’ve found that it works well, so please use it as needed to help keep those ants away.

A little prevention now will help us avoid a much bigger ant problem later!

 





Tuesday Enrichment!

Community Magnet Charter School 

is pleased to offer

FREE after-school Tuesday Enrichment!!!

A selection of enrichment classes will be offered by approved providers free of charge on Tuesdays from 1:30-4:45. Session #1 begins September 8, 2026. We will be offering two sessions this semester – each session requires separate registration. We will even be providing buses leaving Community at about 5:00 to Wilshire Crest ES, Windsor Hills ES and Chandler ES.

Classes will include Art, Chess, Hip Hop, Improv, Lego Engineering, and a Sports Clinic. Class offerings may be subject to change.

There will be time to work on homework, have a snack, and then three rotations of fun each Tuesday for five weeks.

We will do our best to accommodate your requests! We can only accommodate the first 120 students to register!  ALL students must have a completed Kids 4 College application on file to participate.


        









BUS BOOK FORM


We no longer accept phone calls for Bus Book changes.


If your student’s after-school plans change, please complete this Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m.


Our goal is to get students safely and efficiently to their buses, valet, or after-school activities—and your help truly makes a difference.


Here’s how you can help IN 2 easy steps:


STEP 1: Remind your student in the morning if they are staying after school for an activity. Students sometimes forget, and when that happens, they may get on the bus or go to valet instead of heading to their activity. This can delay bus departure as staff work to locate and redirect them.

STEP 2: Submit the Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m. if there are any changes to your student’s usual after-school plans. Telling your student alone isn’t enough—we must confirm changes directly with you. When changes come in late, it can cause confusion and delay buses waiting to depart.

By following these steps, you’re helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and on time—so students get home sooner and buses can return for late pickup more quickly.
