                              Yom Kippur is a day for reflection, saying sorry, forgiving others,                                 and thinking about how we can make better choices in the year ahead.

Dear Community Families,

It’s hard to believe how quickly the school year is moving! Our classrooms are buzzing, our calendar is filling up, and there is no shortage of activity around Community. Here are a few highlights and reminders as we head into another exciting week.

We kicked off our school governance work on Tuesday with the first Community Council meeting of the year. The September agenda is available on our school website under Get Involved > Community Governance Council / Local School Leadership. Click here to read a summary of the meeting. Once approved by Council next month, the official meeting minutes will be posted. Remember, your grade-level Council representatives are your voice in our school governance process, so please reach out to them if there is an issue, idea, or concern you would like brought to Council.

I also have to take a moment to say thank you for all the birthday love! My birthday was last weekend, but the celebration started early when our students surprised me with the sweetest birthday song at Friday’s Morning Assembly. Thank you to CFF and our families for the beautiful flowers, thoughtful gifts, kind messages, and well wishes. You certainly know how to make a principal feel special, and I appreciated every bit of it!

We also reached an important milestone this week—our 25th day of school! With more than a month of school behind us, this is a good time for families to take a quick look at attendance. By the 25th day, missing just three days of school places a student in the chronically absent range. If those absences are unexcused, the student may also be considered truant, which begins LAUSD’s truancy notification process. Continued unexcused absences can result in additional letters from our office and, after a third notification, a School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting to develop an attendance improvement plan.

Every school day matters. Please help us keep our students learning and connected by making on-time, daily attendance a priority and scheduling vacations, family trips, and appointments outside of instructional time whenever possible.

And now for a very exciting adventure! On Wednesday, our 5th Graders are off to AstroCamp! For three days and two nights, students will trade their regular classrooms for hands-on explorations of physics, astronomy, and science in the mountains. From daytime investigations to evening programs, AstroCamp is one of those special elementary school experiences our students will be talking about long after they return home.

Of course, an overnight trip like this would not be possible without the adults willing to pack their bags and join the adventure! A huge thank you to Brandon, Gabriella, Kirsten, Kate, and our wonderful parent chaperones for giving their time and energy to make this unforgettable learning experience possible for our students. Safe travels, 5th Grade—we can’t wait to hear all about it!

Community is officially in full swing, and there is so much more ahead. Thank you for continuing to partner with us, support our students, and contribute to the energy that makes our school community so special. Have a wonderful week!

SHOW UP & SHINE!

Each month this year, I will reward the class with the highest percentage of students with proficient attendance (Attendance Champions) and the class with the most improved attendance from the previous month (Attendance All-Stars). These classes will be recognized at a morning assembly, receive the traveling attendance trophies to hold in their classrooms for the month, and earn extra recess! Do your part to help our students be successful!

A Big Shout-Out to the Puskar-Hausers!


A big shout-out to the Puskar-Hauser family for so generously volunteering their time and talents to beautify our campus!

Delia has truly been a godsend, painting our entire teachers’ lounge as well as the beautiful, colorful USA map at the front of the school. Delia, along with art teacher Kathleen Gaudet, also lent their creative talents to developing the color scheme that is bringing new life and vibrancy to our campus.

And she’s not done yet! Delia is now painting the large classroom numbers throughout the school, with her husband, Jeff, jumping in to lend a helping hand.

Thank you, Delia and Jeff, for sharing your time, creativity, and talents with CMCS. We are so fortunate to have such generous, positive, and supportive members of our school community!



Parent Volunteer Appreciation


A heartfelt thank you to another one of our dedicated parent volunteers, Arefa De Silva (Adira, Gr. 2 and Zora, Gr. 5)! Arefa stepped up to take over the care and upkeep of our school garden a couple of years ago and has devoted countless hours to keeping it beautiful and thriving. We’re so happy that she has lots of helping hands joining her this school year, but we want to recognize Arefa for all of the time, care, and love she has poured into our garden. Thank you, Arefa, for helping keep our CMCS garden blooming!

Parent Volunteer Shout Out!

Our Community parents have been incredibly generous with their time, talents, and support this year! A big thank you to the parent who donated these new balls for our Kindergarten yard—our students are already enjoying them!   

And a special shout-out to Ben, who has been especially busy supporting our school! From reaching out to community partners and gathering donations, to painting our Kinder and upper-grade yards, to making sure all those new balls are pumped up and ready for our kids—Ben has been lending a hand wherever it’s needed.

Thank you to Ben and all of our wonderful parent volunteers for the many ways you help make Community such a special place for our students!

We no longer accept phone calls for Bus Book changes.


If your student’s after-school plans change, please complete this Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m.


Our goal is to get students safely and efficiently to their buses, valet, or after-school activities—and your help truly makes a difference.


Here’s how you can help IN 2 easy steps:


STEP 1: Remind your student in the morning if they are staying after school for an activity. Students sometimes forget, and when that happens, they may get on the bus or go to valet instead of heading to their activity. This can delay bus departure as staff work to locate and redirect them.

STEP 2: Submit the Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m. if there are any changes to your student’s usual after-school plans. Telling your student alone isn’t enough—we must confirm changes directly with you. When changes come in late, it can cause confusion and delay buses waiting to depart.

By following these steps, you’re helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and on time—so students get home sooner and buses can return for late pickup more quickly.

DO YOU KNOW OUR 5 BE'S?






            HOW TO OPT-IN TO CONNECT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

Here is the information on how to opt in to BBC messages if users accidentally opt out of messages.  Opt-Out/Opt-In: Connect Notification System 


The Connect system allows individuals receiving calls, emails or texts to Opt-Out from getting future communications.  


  • At the end of every call, Opt-Out instructions will be heard.  The recipient can press the appropriate number to Opt-Out the phone number on which they are receiving the call.  Alternatively, they can dial (855) 502-7867 to Opt-Out.
  • This will impact receiving Outreach (general) messages and Blackboard Teacher Communication messages.  It does not impact Attendance or Emergency calls sent by schools, local districts or central district offices.  Attendance and Emergency calls directly impact the safety of students and staff and will continue to be delivered by the system.  
  • If an erroneous call is being made to a non-parent or non-employee, and they have already Opted-Out using the automated system, there is still the potential for them to receive Attendance and Emergency calls.  To fully prevent calls from being made to this erroneous number, it must be corrected on the MiSiS Parent/Guardian Information screen for K-12 schools or the appropriate screen in EESIS and DACESIS for Early Education Centers and Adult schools, respectively.  For employees, the correction must occur in the Employee Self-Service system (ess.lausd.net). Deleting the number directly from Connect will only be effective for 24 hours or until the next LAUSD data file is received by Finalsite.
  • Parents and employees can choose to Opt back into receiving Outreach (general) messages by calling (855) 502-7867 for any phone number that was previously Opted-Out.
  • Parents and employees can choose to Opt back in to receiving Text messages by texting "START LAUSD" to 91841.
  • For opting emails back in, please contact the Mass Notification (formerly Blackboard) Office (see Contact Us).
  • Teacher Communication messages will also include the same Opt-Out instructions.
  • For every text and email message sent, the recipient will also be provided instructions on how to Opt-Out from receiving future messages.
