Labor Day is a day when we recognize and thank the people whose work helps our communities and our country.
Dear Community Families,
I hope you are all enjoying a fabulous four-day weekend! It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Back-to-School Night, getting to know your children’s teachers better, and learning about all that’s in store for the school year ahead. It was also exciting to see a packed house in the auditorium for our Parent Volunteer Orientation! We are so fortunate to have so many families eager to get involved and support our school.
A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to the parents who stepped up to serve on this year's Community Council, the school’s decision-making body, made up of parents, staff, teachers, and administration. Their voices and leadership make a real difference for our entire community. Below, you’ll find the parent members and their emails:
Our next school-wide celebrations are our Hispanic Heritage presentations and assemblies next month, quickly followed by one of our favorite CMCS traditions—the Parade of Masks!
This week, our after-school tutoring program begins, led by our very own CMCS teachers. Unfortunately, due to a few unexpected obstacles, we’ve had to postpone the start of our after-school intervention program until next month and Tuesday Enrichment for a few weeks. We are working hard to get everything ironed out so that we can provide these important, engaging, and enriching opportunities for our students. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
On Thursday, we will practice our first lockdown drill of the school year. A lockdown is an emergency response used when there is a direct or potentially dangerous threat on or near campus, such as a dangerous animal or nearby police activity. During a lockdown, students and staff move to the nearest classroom or office, lock doors, close windows and blinds, and remain quiet until the all-clear is given. Because our beautiful campus is nestled in the natural environment of the Bel Air hills, we typically frame this drill for students around the possibility of a coyote or other wild animal entering campus. As with all of our emergency drills, our goal is to help students practice safety procedures in a calm, age-appropriate manner so they know what to do if an emergency ever occurs.
We’ve also heard from several parents who have realized that they are no longer receiving school or District messages through our Blackboard Connect system. In many cases, this happens because a recipient has unintentionally opted out of notifications. Below, you will find directions for opting back in so you don’t miss important CMCS and District communications.
Finally, I want to end with some well-deserved Community gratitude! Parent Ben (Reya, Grade 2, and Luke, Grade 4) shared a special shout-out to Lori and Noah (Rory, Grade K/Fiona, Grade 4) for their incredibly generous donation of tricycles for our Kindergarten yard! I’d also like to personally thank Lori and Noah for this wonderful gift to our youngest students.
And a big thank-you to Ben for putting out the call, assembling the tricycles, repainting the Kindergarten yard, and making repairs to our Kindergarten playhouses. That is truly going above and beyond for our students!
Our parents are the BEST, and we are so grateful for all the ways you help make Community such a special place.

BRAND NEW TRICYCLES FOR THE KINDER YARD!
. Hello All!
Five new trikes came in this morning! Four single seat trikes and one double seat trike! Toni was our first rider!
Many thanks for your generous donation, Lori and Noah! Whoo Hoo!!!! Kinder kids were so excited to see new trikes! So many happy faces! We were able to donate three of the old trikes. Going to try to keep one of the older double seat trikes pending I can do some minor repairs using parts from another old trike.
The Kinder playground is undergoing some cosmetic "refreshing". The last refresh was almost 8 years ago when Toni arrived to CMCS!

At the end of every call, Opt-Out instructions will be heard. The recipient can press the appropriate number to Opt-Out the phone number on which they are receiving the call. Alternatively, they can dial (855) 502-7867 to Opt-Out.
This will impact receiving Outreach (general) messages and Blackboard Teacher Communication messages. It does not impact Attendance or Emergency calls sent by schools, local districts or central district offices. Attendance and Emergency calls directly impact the safety of students and staff and will continue to be delivered by the system.
If an erroneous call is being made to a non-parent or non-employee, and they have already Opted-Out using the automated system, there is still the potential for them to receive Attendance and Emergency calls. To fully prevent calls from being made to this erroneous number, it must be corrected on the MiSiS Parent/Guardian Information screen for K-12 schools or the appropriate screen in EESIS and DACESIS for Early Education Centers and Adult schools, respectively. For employees, the correction must occur in the Employee Self-Service system (ess.lausd.net). Deleting the number directly from Connect will only be effective for 24 hours or until the next LAUSD data file is received by Finalsite.
Parents and employees can choose to Opt back into receiving Outreach (general) messages by calling (855) 502-7867 for any phone number that was previously Opted-Out.
Parents and employees can choose to Opt back in to receiving Text messages by texting "START LAUSD" to 91841.
For opting emails back in, please contact the Mass Notification (formerly Blackboard) Office (see Contact Us).
Teacher Communication messages will also include the same Opt-Out instructions.
For every text and email message sent, the recipient will also be provided instructions on how to Opt-Out from receiving future messages.
