Get Ready for Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week!

HISPANIC HERITAGE CULTURAL ASSEMBLY

As part of our Latino Heritage Month celebration, CMCS is excited to take our students on a special journey into the vibrant culture and traditions of Nicaragua!

We are honored to welcome Dariana Garcia, a first-generation student at the University of California, Berkeley, who will share her Nicaraguan heritage with our students through a special traditional folklórico dance performance.

Through Dariana's performance, students will have an opportunity to experience firsthand how music, dance, colorful traditional dress, food, and community celebrations help tell the story of Nicaragua and its people. Nicaragua has a rich and diverse cultural heritage shaped by Indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, with music and dance remaining important expressions of that heritage.

And no cultural celebration would be complete without food! Students will also have an opportunity to sample traditional Nicaraguan favorites, including
buñuelos and tajadas de plátano.  Plantains are an important ingredient in Nicaraguan cuisine, while buñuelos are a beloved traditional dessert.

We look forward to celebrating Nicaraguan heritage and the rich diversity of Latino cultures with our CMCS students through an afternoon of dance, food, learning, and community.

Dear Community Families,

There is a lot happening at Community right now, and I’m excited to share some good news!

Our after-school programs are back!

On Monday, October 5, Math Kangaroo jumps into its first session as students begin preparing for the annual Math Kangaroo competition on March 18. We are so grateful to Howard, Seira, and the entire Math Kangaroo team for their passion, persistence, and determination to keep this amazing program alive and hopping at Community! Our CMCS teachers and parent coaches are ready to go!

On Wednesday, our Fall Intervention program kicks off, providing additional academic support for students. After-school intervention gives students the opportunity to receive targeted, small-group instruction from the very best—our own CMCS teachers! A huge thank you to our teachers who, after a full day of teaching, are willing to put in up to two additional hours to support our students. We appreciate you!

After-school Tutoring also began a couple of weeks ago with a big change this year. Rather than using the outside agency Student Nest, our own CMCS teachers have taken over tutoring for our students. Kathi is on top of it all, coordinating student groups, teachers, and after-school transportation. Thank you, Kathi!

And Tuesday Enrichment is not too far behind! We are hoping with everything we’ve got that the Tuesday Enrichment program will begin on October 13. Our arts enrichment teachers still have a few district hurdles to clear, and Kathryn has been working feverishly to cut through the bureaucratic red tape and get this student-favorite program up and running. We are sooo close!

Behind all of these programs is our amazing team of teachers and Instructional Aides. None of this would be possible without their support. Lalita keeps everything moving, tracking every student, every bus, and every transportation plan! Samara and the Kids 4 College crew are right there as well, providing after-school support and helping make sure our students are taken care of.

It truly takes a team, and what an amazing team we have supporting our students and families!

And speaking of our amazing Community…we need your help spreading the word!

We want more families to discover what makes Community Magnet such a special place. Our current families are our best ambassadors, so please tell your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members about Community and encourage them to come visit us.

Our upcoming Prospective Parent Tours are October 14, October 28, and November 4 at 8:30 a.m. No registration is necessary—just come join us!

We’ll also have a Community Magnet booth at the Region West Choices Fair at Los Angeles High School on Tuesday, October 6, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Please send prospective families our way!

The Choices/Opciones application window is now open and runs through November 6. This is the time for families interested in Community Magnet to apply for the 2027–28 school year.

There are so many wonderful things happening at Community, and we want future families to know about them! Please help us grow our Community by spreading the word.

Have a wonderful week!

Toni

P.S. Since our Tiny Spotlight Musical Theater program has been in such high demand, we have added a second theater program to our after school activities. Please find more information about "The Plays . . . The Things" below.

Thank You, Alvaro!

A big thank you to Alvaro (Valentina, Gr. 2 and Camila, Gr. 6) for answering our call for help! He came through to help Albert move the heavy furniture between classrooms, and we truly appreciate him lending a hand.

It’s always wonderful to see our Community families step up when we need a little extra help.

Thank you, Alvaro!

WHAT’S FOR LUNCH?

DO YOU KNOW OUR 5 BE'S?

BUS BOOK FORM

We no longer accept phone calls for Bus Book changes.

If your student’s after-school plans change, please complete this Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m.

Our goal is to get students safely and efficiently to their buses, valet, or after-school activities—and your help truly makes a difference.

Here’s how you can help IN 2 easy steps:

STEP 1: Remind your student in the morning if they are staying after school for an activity. Students sometimes forget, and when that happens, they may get on the bus or go to valet instead of heading to their activity. This can delay bus departure as staff work to locate and redirect them.

STEP 2: Submit the Bus Book Form before 12:00 p.m. if there are any changes to your student’s usual after-school plans. Telling your student alone isn’t enough—we must confirm changes directly with you. When changes come in late, it can cause confusion and delay buses waiting to depart.

By following these steps, you’re helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and on time—so students get home sooner and buses can return for late pickup more quickly.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our students safe and our afternoons running smoothly!

Community Magnet ended the 25-26 school year with a Chronic Attendance Rate below 10%! Let's keep up the good work! Come to school on time every day!

HOW TO OPT-IN TO CONNECT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

Here is the information on how to opt in to BBC messages if users accidentally opt out of messages.  Opt-Out/Opt-In: Connect Notification System

The Connect system allows individuals receiving calls, emails or texts to Opt-Out from getting future communications.

  • At the end of every call, Opt-Out instructions will be heard.  The recipient can press the appropriate number to Opt-Out the phone number on which they are receiving the call.  Alternatively, they can dial (855) 502-7867 to Opt-Out.
  • This will impact receiving Outreach (general) messages and Blackboard Teacher Communication messages.  It does not impact Attendance or Emergency calls sent by schools, local districts or central district offices.  Attendance and Emergency calls directly impact the safety of students and staff and will continue to be delivered by the system.
  • If an erroneous call is being made to a non-parent or non-employee, and they have already Opted-Out using the automated system, there is still the potential for them to receive Attendance and Emergency calls.  To fully prevent calls from being made to this erroneous number, it must be corrected on the MiSiS Parent/Guardian Information screen for K-12 schools or the appropriate screen in EESIS and DACESIS for Early Education Centers and Adult schools, respectively.  For employees, the correction must occur in the Employee Self-Service system (ess.lausd.net). Deleting the number directly from Connect will only be effective for 24 hours or until the next LAUSD data file is received by Finalsite.
  • Parents and employees can choose to Opt back into receiving Outreach (general) messages by calling (855) 502-7867 for any phone number that was previously Opted-Out.
  • Parents and employees can choose to Opt back in to receiving Text messages by texting "START LAUSD" to 91841.
  • For opting emails back in, please contact the Mass Notification (formerly Blackboard) Office (see Contact Us).
  • Teacher Communication messages will also include the same Opt-Out instructions.
  • For every text and email message sent, the recipient will also be provided instructions on how to Opt-Out from receiving future messages.
