    • UTLA members voted 91% in favor of remaining committed to distance learning until these three safety criteria are met:
      • LA County is out of the purple tier
        • LA County is now in the red tier!
      • Staff are either fully vaccinated or provided access to full vaccination
        • Many members of our staff have received first doses of the COVID vaccine. However, some have still been unable to secure a first dose due to underlying medical conditions.
      • Safety conditions are in place at our schools including PPE, physical distancing, improved ventilation, and daily cleaning
        • During our first week back to campus, we have taken inventory of PPE and ordered additional PPE items. We are stocked with masks for adults and children, hand sanitizer, hand sanitizer dispenser stations, hand sanitizer wipes, gloves, contactless thermometers, plexiglass sneeze guards, face shields, goggles and bottled water. We will continue to review and update our PPE inventory, as needed.

    MARCH DISTRIBUTION

    Hello Community Families,

It’s hard to believe it’s mid-March already! Thank you for your patience and support…we miss our fun and action-packed days on campus with your students, and can’t wait until we can all be together again safely at school. Thank you too to our amazing teachers who are working harder than ever to deliver the best possible virtual-learning experience to our students.

Our next Distribution Days are March 18th and 19th. Teachers will be passing out academic materials to take us through late April (hopefully we be back in some sort of hybrid model). We will also pass out any other certificates, books, t-shirts, etc. that your student may have.

If you want to reserve library books, the deadline for that is Tuesday, 3/16. Any books already checked out must be returned before new books will be loaned. Contact Sarah Lilly if you have questions about library books at slilly3@lausd.net .

Should you need to swap out a laptop, you must notify Toni by Tuesday, 3/16 in order to pick up a replacement during distribution. To receive a replacement device, you must bring back your broken computer and charger. Email Sarah Lilly at slilly3@lausd.net .

We look forward to seeing you during the time slot indicated below. During your scheduled 30-minute distribution time, you will enter through the east Entrance Gate and proceed as directed by staff. Please have any items you are returning already loaded into your trunk. When instructed, pop your trunk – we want to avoid opening car windows. Because of the very tight schedule, we are asking that you please stick to the assigned window for each student if at all possible. Our teachers will be here during their assigned time only – something to be aware of if you have more than one child. If you must pick up for more than one student during one window, we can accommodate. No student will be counted absent during their distribution time or during a sibling’s time – just notify the teacher if you will be coming during a sibling’s time slot. Please follow the guidance provided by your teacher regarding expectations for attendance and entering/exiting your zoom classroom based upon your assigned distribution time. Please note our restrooms will be closed. We look forward to waving hello!

    CMCS REOPENING FAQ

    AS OF 3/12/2021

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS INFORMATION MAY CHANGE AND WILL BE UPDATED AS NEW INFORMATION IS PROVIDED BY LAUSD.

    MISCELLANEOUS: assessments/culmination

Will the 3rd graders be taking the OLSAT this year?

Though we don't know when, once the OLSAT is administered, 2nd and 3rd graders should be taking the OLSAT this year.

Will there be a possibility of having an in-person culmination?

There is that possibility. Of course, this will be determined by the progress made toward controlling COVID infection rates. Schools are advised to have multiple plans in place: one virtual, one physical on campus, and the possibility of culmination at Hamilton High.

Can virtual 5th graders come up for the last day to say goodbye to their friends?

This will be determined by the progress made toward controlling COVID infection rates.

     SCHEDULES/COHORTS

Will we have the am/pm schedule considering the bus situation?  Does CMCS have the option of doing full day cohorts on alternating days?

We are requesting alternating days rather than a split day. Stay tuned for updates on this question.

How will the am and pm cohorts be determined? Will we have a choice?

Ultimately, cohorts will be determined by the principal using information such as results from the return to school survey, available staffing, classroom teacher, special services, transportation, etc.

Cohort options include 2 in-person cohorts, 2 remote learning cohorts, or 1 of each.

Reorganization of classes might be needed.

Do parents get a preference on whether our kid is a morning learner or afternoon learner?

The survey does ask the parent for am/pm preference.

If half choose to stay remote, can those who choose hybrid actually go 5 days a week?

The am/pm schedule is M-F/5 days per week.

How is a split day going to work?  If my child returns to school, who will be teaching cohort b while cohort a is in class and vice versa?

    8-11 (Cohort A) and 12-3 (Cohort B)

What obligations will the kids have at home if they go straight home after the 3 hours of instruction? Is it in person in the morning then online in the afternoon? Can we see a sample schedule?

Students will have independent/asynchronous work outside of their 3-hour instructional block.

Can we send our child in and then decide to switch to virtual (and vice versa)?

Parents may switch from hybrid to on-line at any time. Parents will have the option of switching from on-line to hybrid every two weeks.

    Will grade-level teachers be teaming/mixing?

Due to social distancing protocols, there will be no teaming/mixing. All enrichment, besides PE, will be remote.

     TEACHER

If they go back to campus, are they guaranteed to stay with their teacher? If they stay home, will they have a different teacher?

On the Return to School Survey, whether we choose the in-person or the remote learning option, will the students remain with their current teacher?

There is no guarantee. It will depend on results from the parent survey.

If we opt to remain virtual. Does that mean our student will have a substitute teacher in that virtual environment?

We will try to avoid having substitutes. Of course, staffing will be determined by results of the parent survey.

When will we know which teachers by grade will remain to do online and which are doing in-person hybrid instruction?

Once the results to parent surveys are available and reviewed.

Is there a way to ensure that we keep our teacher? If we choose remote but then learn that will mean getting a new teacher will we have the opportunity to change our minds and rejoin the class- or vice versa?

There is no way to ensure that every student will keep their teacher.

Why will kids who choose to stay online have a new teacher?

It’s possible that online students will have their same teacher. It depends on the parent survey results.

We want to stay with our Kinder teacher. Will the teachers be teaching an in-person cohort (AM) and their second cohort online (PM)? A teacher’s cohorts may consist of 2 in-person cohorts, 2 on-line cohorts, or one of each.

Meaning our Kinder teacher will be teaching the same material twice a day?  Yes

If we stayed virtual, is the plan to have a CMCS teacher, or someone random teacher from LAUSD?

We are hoping to stay within our CMCS community of teachers.

    TRANSPORTATION

How will the children be transported on the school bus and social distance?  What is the max number of bus seats each way? Will this be prioritized? How? (??)

12-15 students per bus, every other seat, masked, windows open, siblings may sit together.

Will bussing still be provided? yes

Will bus drivers screen students? Yes

    Is carpooling encouraged or discouraged?

Carpooling is discouraged unless in same household.

The following information is unavailable at this time.

What will be the bus transportation pickup and return schedule?

Do students need to take the same bus to and from school?

    ONLINE LEARNING

How will my child engage in learning if I decide for her not to return to school at this time? On-line

How will online instruction work for students that stay remote? Is the school day just going to be 3 hours?

3 hours of direct instruction with additional synchronous/independent work.

    MEALS

Will BIC and lunch be provided? Lunch will be grab and go

    PPE

Will there be a daily packing list for each student to bring to school? i.e. face mask, extra mask, baby wipes, tissue, etc.

While we will provide all of these items at school, it’s a good idea for students to bring their own as well.

Will students be required to change their mask daily or wash them? Yes

How will this be enforced? We ask that parents enforce this at home.

    SPECIAL SERVICES

How will RSP and OT services be provided in the hybrid model? Would that happen before/after the 3 hours while on campus or stay remote?

Special services will be provided one-on-one using plexiglass shields where needed. Where possible, services may be provided to more than one student within the same cohort.

Students with IEPs have been invited back to campus as of March4 with teachers or staff who volunteer to be there with them? Who at CMCS is volunteering?

Special ed. Assessments will begin 3/19. District personnel will fill in for school-site personnel where needed.

The NPA that provides my child’s BII is providing in-person support at school now. When can we arrange to have our child and the BII along with peers with IEPS meet at the school to begin a re-integration process?

The exact date for reopening has not been determined yet. Once we return to campus, interaction between students/adults will be limited to their cohort.

Will CMCS have kids come back earlier for small groups? Resource students?

CMCS has no plans for early return of students.

Will special education services remain online for now so they can take full advantage of the in-class time provided?

     Some services will continue on-line.

    COVID TESTING

Will the school arrange a self-test COVID testing provider set up weekly at the school for all families?

Yes, weekly COVID testing will occur at each school site.

Will the school be using rapid COVID tests? no

Will students be required to test every 2 weeks?

While Los Angeles County is in the Red Tier, as currently defined by the California Department of Public Health, the District shall require COVID testing for all students and staff at least every two (2) weeks.  Frequency of testing may change as LA County moves between tiers.

When should students get tested for April return to school?

Baseline testing will be conducted for all students and staff during the 7 days prior to a physical reopening of LAUSD schools for regular in-person instruction. All LAUSD students and staff who will be returning to the school campus will be provided with a

back-to-school baseline test. Students whose families choose to continue distance learning are not required to participate in this testing program.

    COVID OUTBREAK

If there is an outbreak that affects several classes, will all in-person instruction be cancelled?

What is the process if a student is confirmed positive for COVID?

Please refer to the Family Guide, p. 8-9.

    SAFETY

Will CMCS be opening windows in the classrooms for increased ventilation?

    yes

Are Rick and Andrew expected to clean and sanitize every classroom every day between 11-12?

An outside agency will conduct midday cleaning and sanitation. Rick and Andrew will be responsible for before and after school cleaning and sanitation.

    RECESS

Will the children have the opportunity for recess and playtime together?

    Yes, within their own cohorts.

    Support for school

What is the best way families can support the school and teachers? Complete the survey, try to stick with your choice or not change between online and hybrid frequently. Be patient and provide your questions. Let’s work together. Realize that this will not be a perfect situation, but we can do it.

    SUMMER SCHOOL

The district survey mentioned summer school. Do you know yet if there will be an extended summer school program on CMCS campus.

Special Ed. Summer school will be available. LAUSD is looking into other formats for other summer school options.

    DAILY PASS / DAILY CHECK-IN

    Print-out or device?

Print-out or verbal answers will work best for CMCS.

Will the check in occur before 8am?

Check in will occur at arrival.

How much time will check-in take?

Don’t know. We will have two check-in areas.
