Six-Week Invitational Parent Conference Week
Hello, Community Families,
Another week down! Our first Council Meeting was on Tuesday. You will find the September agenda posted on the website under the Get Involved > Community Council tab. The meeting minutes will be posted next month after Council approval. Please let your grade-level representative know if there is a concern you'd like addressed by Council.
My birthday was Friday (the 13th 😁) and it was a great day! It began with the students singing a very sweet birthday song at Morning Assembly. The office staff treated Maria (whose birthday is Sept. 14th) and I to a delicious lunch, and I received these beautiful flowers from CFF and parents. Thank you, everyone, for making my birthday extra-special!
After morning assembly, I was so happy to see so many parents in-person and on Zoom for TeaTime with Toni. The topic was i-Ready Diagnostics and Personalized Instruction. If you missed it, the presentation is linked below with a link to the Digital Readiness Kit for Families. I love having you at TeaTime, so please let me know the topics you're most interested in learning more about.
Believe it or not, Tuesday, September 17th marks the 25th day of school! Summer vacation is now officially in the distant past! If your child has already missed 3 or more days of school, they are considered chronic absentees. If these absences are unexcused, your child is truant and you will be receiving a truancy letter directly from LAUSD. For each additional unexcused absence, you will receive a 2nd and 3rd truancy letter from me. After the 3rd letter, if attendance does not improve, the parents will be invited to a School Attendance Review Team to identify solutions to improve attendance. Please make sure that your child is in school on time every day. Please schedule vacations, family trips, medical appointments, etc. outside of the instructional school day.
Six-Week Invitational Parent Conferences begin tomorrow. These conferences are unique to Community Magnet Charter and are in addition to the district-scheduled conferences in November and March. These Six-Week conferences, which are mandatory for all CMCS kindergarten families, give parents and teachers an early opportunity to identify any social, academic, or behavioral concerns. Parents of students in Gr. 1-5 may be invited to conference by the teacher if there is a concern. If you do not receive a conference invitation, but would like to meet, please contact the teacher to set up an appointment. Wednesday, September 18 will be a minimum day with a 12:50 dismissal.
The first cycle of Tuesday Enrichment clasOctses begins this week. Math Kangaroo (MK) registration has closed and we are now planning and preparing rosters. MK is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 7th and will meet every Monday unless noted otherwise. After-school intervention is scheduled to begin on September 25th for select grade-levels and will meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are currently analyzing i-Ready Math data to determine which students may benefit from additional small group instructional support. Parents will be notified this week if your child is invited to attend. Late bus transportation is provided for all of these after-school activities.
Our 5th Graders set off for ASTRO CAMP on Wednesday!! They will participate in fun, hands-on, and evening activities focused on physics and astronomy. This 3-day overnight field trip is one students remember for the rest of their lives! A big THANK YOU to their teachers and parent chaperones for helping to make this an adventure to remember!
As you can see, things are getting busy at Community! Thank you for your collaboration and support. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon.
Best,
Toni

Thank you to all the parents who have already submitted volunteer applications for the 2024-2025 school year. While quite a few applications have been approved, many are stuck in the process because of expired TB clearance. TB clearance must be updated every 4 years, so if your TB clearance was provided in 2020, it's time to update.
Please look out for the parent volunteer training coming soon.
SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY!
Students need to come to school every day. When possible, please schedule your child’s medical appointments outside of school hours. (See the bell schedule for our school hours.) If you must schedule an appointment during school hours, please check in at the main office to pick up/drop off your child.
The following types of absences are excused: illness, doctor’s appointments, funerals, family emergencies, court dates, religious observances, etc. Examples of unexcused absences include: vacations, “we slept in,” “we took a family day,” “we went to Disneyland for her birthday,” "we visited relatives out of state/country," etc. Even if you send in a note to explain the absence, those examples would be designated as unexcused. For more information, please refer to LAUSD’s Attendance Guide.
You may know that LAUSD has an Independent Study program. This program is intended to provide make-up classwork for students who must miss school for legitimate long-term absences (for example, needing to go out of town for a death in the family, quarantine/lengthy stay at home for serious illness, or needing to make a visa appointment in a home country). Independent Study is NOT for “we are taking 2 weeks off and going abroad,” or “we are starting our Winter Break 10 days early.” For Independent Study in excess of 15 days, you must enroll in the online City of Angels program.
REGISTER FOR KIDS 4 COLLEGE FREE AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE
- Arrive at CMCS between 7:30 and 8:00
- Enter through the gate on the EAST side of the school.
- Drive along the left curb. The right curb is a bus lane whether or not the buses have arrived.
- Wait patiently in a single file line along the left curb of the driveway.
- When a valet volunteer or LAUSD staff directs you, turn right at the parking lot and pull up to the Valet Curb. There can be a maximum of 3 cars at the Valet Curb.
- Under no circumstances can you park with your child and walk them through the parking lot. If, especially during these first weeks of school, you want to walk your child to the front gate, you MUST drop your child at the Valet Curb and then park your car. Your child can wait for you near the valet volunteers on the bench by the Valet Curb.
- When you arrive at the Valet Curb, your child should be ready to exit the car from the passenger side of the vehicle. IF a passenger side exit from your vehicle is unavailable, your child must wait until a valet volunteer opens the driver side door and escorts them in front of your car onto the curb.
- Under no circumstances should the driver exit the vehicle.
- Do not pull around cars in the valet line including at the Valet Curb. The line is single file from the east gate entrance through to the west gate exit. Please wait your turn to drop off your child and to exit campus.
- FINALLY, be patient and kind. The valet volunteers and LAUSD staff are there for the safety of your children. Please treat them, the children, and the other drivers with respect.
