We're Celebrating Black History!
WE'RE CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY!
Dear Community Families,
Friday was an unforgettable day! Our Black History Month assembly was both fun and educational, highlighting the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the Divine 9—the prestigious group of Black sororities and fraternities.
A special thank you to Christina K. (Vivienne, 5th grade, and Juliette, 1st grade) for organizing an incredible group of USC students from the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Their electrifying step performances captivated the audience, and students were thrilled to learn a few moves themselves!Following the dynamic performances, students enjoyed a delicious treat—biscuits with honey butter! The highlight for the staff was the flavorful gumbo, generously prepared by our very own Chef Govind Armstrong (Nesta and Sonika, 3rd grade).
As the saying goes, it takes a village! A heartfelt thank you to these members of our village:
Lynda Andrews, Christina Knight, Courtney Washington, Jennifer Archie -- thank you for the days of preparation you put forth!
Janae Jones, Sonia Oochie, British Wagya, Jordan Adero, Lola Wood, Jules Jones, Marlena Wurbs, Danielle Lewis -- thank you for helping make this day such a special one!
LAUSD's cell phone policy went into effect on Tuesday, February 18th. The week following winter break, all parents received notification of Community’s cell phone policy and were asked to review, sign, and return an agreement. To date, we have received approximately 20% of the agreements. If you have not yet submitted your signed agreement, please [click here] for access and return the completed form as soon as possible. You may email it to trk2932@lausd.net or send a hard copy to the main office.
Since our policy took effect, we have confiscated three smartwatches and returned them to parents. After receiving reports from students about others using their phones on the buses, I addressed the issue during a morning assembly and in the daily announcements. Thank you for your cooperation and support in adhering to our school policy.
On Thursday, we conducted our monthly fire drill, evacuating to the auditorium as per our protocol for a nearby wildfire. LAUSD's Office of Emergency Management Manager, Krashawndra Edwards, joined us to provide support and guidance during the drill and debriefing.
When the alarm sounded, students, teachers, and TAs assembled in the auditorium, while all other staff gathered in the adjoining teacher’s lounge. Office staff and teachers accounted for all students, staff, and visitors on campus. Once attendance was confirmed, students were promptly evacuated to seven waiting school buses, accommodating all students, teachers, and TAs. All other staff members will be required to use their own vehicles.
The evacuation was swift and orderly, with students demonstrating excellent behavior and teachers and staff maintaining calm and composure. Ms. Edwards was highly impressed with our efficiency—completing the drill in under 23 minutes. Moving forward, we will continue to practice reducing evacuation time. Key takeaways from this drill include utilizing all auditorium doors for quicker entry and exit and confirming that the fire alarm is audible on the upper yard during recess.
This week, we will practice our Lockdown drill. During a lockdown, students are moved (or remain) inside for their safety because there is some sort of threat to the well-being of the students. Lockdowns are implemented for a variety of reasons, including an intruder on campus, police action in the area, disruptive community incident, or even a dangerous animal on campus. In a lockdown, school buildings are used to help protect the students from outside harm. During a lockdown, school administrators and district officials work closely with law enforcement and other outside agencies to maximize student safety. The level of activity allowed on campus during a lockdown varies widely by incident, and decisions about student movement and services within the campus are based on what is safest for students in each incident.
